Barton schedules summer outreach courses in Russell

Barton Community College has announced enrollment times for its summer 2011 outreach courses. The college's summer bulletin of classes lists all outreach courses and workshops. Bulletins are available at area libraries and high schools. Enrollment for outreach classes in Russell is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, at Russell High School. Courses include English Composition I (ITV), Introduction to Sociology (ITV), English Composition II and College Algebra. Crime Stoppers seeks info on bike theft

An orange and gray Trek bicycle was stolen from Golden Belt Bicycle Company, 1111 Main, on March 18. Great Bend Police Chief Dean Akings reports a man asked to test drive the bike and never returned. He is described as a white male, 6 feet tall, weighing 215 pounds, with red hair and a diamond earring.

Barton to Host KSHSAA Regional Music Festival

The Barton Community College Music Department will host the Kansas High School Activities Association Regional Small Ensembles and Solos Music Festival from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 9.

Program: Seasoning with Spices and Herbs

The Great Bend Recreation Commission will host a free Stop 'N Learn Session titled, "Seasoning With Spices And Herbs," from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday at the Great Bend Activity Center, 2715 18th St. The program will also be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Sr. Center, 2005 Kansas Ave.

Drivers Education meeting

There will be a Drivers Ed parent meeting in the Commons area of the high school on Wednesday Students interested in taking driver education must be age 14 by June 1. Last names starting A-M will meet from 4 to 5 p.m. Last names N-Z will meet from 5 to 6 p.m. Enrollment will take place after the meeting, enrollment forms will not be accepted without payment. Cost for the class is $150 ($100 for students qualifying for free/reduced lunches).

Tanner Hlavaty Memorial Scholarship Benefit Dinner announced

The Tanner Hlavaty Memorial Scholarship Benefit Dinner will be held from 4-7 p.m. April 17 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Olmitz. The menu will include Tanner's favorite foods: Hot dogs, beans, chips, macaroni and cheese, and Oreo dirt cake. Free-will offerings will be accepted and proceeds will go toward a scholarship fund for Otis-Bison High School seniors.

Arts Center announces tag sale

A tag sale at the Barton County Arts Center, 1401 Main, Great Bend, has been rescheduled. Executive Director Karen Neuforth said the said will be held Saturday, April 9, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Items including ceramics, paintings, frames and LPs will be on sale, with proceeds benefiting the BCAC. Donations are also welcome.

Crime Stoppers seeks info on burglary

Sometime between Feb. 20 and March 11, a storage building at 900 MacArthur Road in Great Bend was burglarized. Police Chief Dean Akings reports two 3-ton York air conditioners were stolen. "The electrical cables and lines were cut, and the units were hauled off. Loss was $4,700," Akings said.
