Last kids’ KWEC winter program this Saturday

There are a few openings in the March 5 Kansas Wetlands Education Center "Nature's Marvelous Inventions" program for kids ages 6 to 12. The free program runs from 10-11 a.m. at the Center, 10 miles northeast of Great Bend on K-156. Discover where people found ideas for Velcro, airplanes, armor and paper - to name just a few human inventions already used by plants and animals - play a game and make an invention.

College trustees plan two-day board retreat

The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will hold a board retreat Thursday and Friday in Junction CIty and at Fort Riley. The board will meet from 8-10 p.m. Thursday at the Courtyard Junction City, 310 Hammons Dr., Junction City. On Friday members will meet from 7-11:45 a.m. in the Riley Conference Room, followed by a tour of Fort Riley from noon to 3:30 p.m., and concluding with a faculty/staff meeting from 4-6 p.m. at 602 N. Washington St., Junction City.

Women only shooting clinic

A women-only Basic Shoot clinic by C&R Training, will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 12 at the Zumalt Building, 301 W. Broadway in Stafford.

Sunflower Polka Club: Wes Windholz Band to perform at free dance

The Sunflower Polka Club will have a free dance from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, March 6, at the Hoisington Knights of Columbus, located at Second and Main in Hoisington.

Friends of Library to meet in one week

The Great Bend Public Library Friends group will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 6, in the library's Kansas Room. Plans are being made for National Library Week in April and the annual book sale. Membership is $10 a year.

Free programs feature wildlife photography of Cheyenne Bottoms

The Great Bend Recreation Commission will host a free Stop 'N Learn Session titled "Wildlife Photography of Cheyenne Bottoms," from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the Great Bend Activity Center, 2715 18th St. This program will also be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 7, at the Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave.

Lifeguard training offered in March

The Great Bend Recreation Commission's Lifeguard Training Class will be held March 20-25 at Barton Community College. This class is for any individual wanting to become a lifeguard.

BCC Theatre has auditions for 'Baby with the Bathwater'

Barton Community College's BCC Theatre has announced auditions for its spring production, "Baby with the Bathwater," by Christopher Durang. Auditions are set for 6 p.m. Monday in the college's Fine Arts Auditorium.

Walk Kansas meeting set for Wednesday

The Great Bend Recreation Commission, along with Donna Krug, FCS Agent at Barton County Extension office, will host a Walk Kansas informational meeting from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the Great Bend Activity Center, 2715 18th St. The public is invited to attend and learn about Walk Kansas, an eight-week program where teams of six form to collectively walk 423 miles - the distance across Kansas.

GBPL observes Black History Month with art exhibition

The Great Bend Public Library is observing Black History Month by featuring works by African American artists in its Fine Arts Room. Works by Thelma Russi, Billie Broils, Danny Nobles, Mike Clark Jr., Sharmara Shellman and Alonzo Snipes are on display.

ElderCare rep to speak on safeguarding seniors

Karen Sessler of ElderCare will present "Safeguarding Our Seniors," at 1 p.m. Monday at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. Participants can learn how to keep themselves or a loved one safe at home. Sessler will cover tips on fall prevention, medication safety, identity protection, and signs that indicate an individual needs assistance.

Shafer exhibits end Sunday

Sunday will be the last day people can view the Marko Fields and Carol Long Ceramics Exhibit at Barton Community College's Shafer Gallery. The Black History Month exhibit, "Black Women: Achievements Against the Odds," an exhibit of posters from the Smithsonian Institute, also will end Sunday.

McCaffery and Brenner to speak at BCC trustees meeting

The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will hear a faculty presentation by history instructor Linda McCaffery, with Dr. Bill Brenner of Larned, when it meets at 4 p.m. Friday in room F-30, in the lower level of the Fine Arts Building.
