Crime Stoppers of Barton County and Great Bend is seeking information about break-ins at Venture Corporation, at both the home office, 214 South U.S. 281, Great Bend, and the plant at Dundee. Copper wire was stolen at both locations, and both buildings had damage. Property loss and damage are estimated at $30,000.
ST. JOHN - Ida Long Goodman Memorial Library, 406 North Monroe, St. John, will host a Quivira National Wildlife Refuge program, "Introduction to Birds and Birdwatching," from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 24. The presenter, Barry Jones, visitor services specialist at Quivira NWR, will intended for the beginner or less-experienced birdwatcher. He will share 10 steps to easier birding, followed by a presentaiton on common birds and bird groups of Quivira and the surrounding area. There will be samples of bird field guidebooks and optical aids.

A land auction for Habitat for Humanity of Barton County, scheduled for Tuesday evening, was rescheduled because of the unsafe weather conditions. Habitat co-chairman Rachel Mawhirter said the auction will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, in the board room of the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce & Economic Development, 1125 Williams. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

A cruelty to animals case was taken after a brown and white Shih Tzu dog was found on 10th St. with two blow gun darts stuck in its fur, around 2:20 p.m. Thursday. Seth Orebaugh with the Golden Belt Humane Society picked up the dog.

An Otis woman was injured Tuesday evening on a Barton County road, 4 miles north and 3 miles west of Galatia.
An attempted fraud was reported to the Barton County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday. Someone called a Barton County resident saying her grandson was in trouble in New Mexico and needed help. The woman hung up before finding out what kind of "help" was wanted, and instead called her grandson, who said he was fine.
