Boley to speak on ‘Kansas Quackers’

The public is invited to come learn about some of the early doctors in Kansas during a program at 1 p.m. Monday at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. Local history buff Joe Boley will present an informative program titled "Kansas Quackers," where he will talk especially about Dr. John Brinkly (1885-1942), the infamous "Goat Gland Docotor."

Chamber Coffee

Veterans Service Representative visit

A Veterans Service Representative from the Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs will be at the Great Bend Kansasworks center, 1025 Main Street, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday to assist veterans and their families in applying for VA benefits. The Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs is a state agency that provides free assistance to veterans and their families with veterans' benefits. Call 785-625-8532 for more information.

Juvenile motorist hits buildings, vehicle; injury reported

A juvenile motorist was involved in an injury accident on Maple St. at 9:25 a.m. Sunday. The driver was northbound in the 300 block and struck a parked vehicle in a yard at 314 Maple, continued north and hit a curb at Fifth and Maple, then struck the railroad tracks, a fence and a shed, then hit the residence at 917 Eighth St., and then an object flew in the air and struck a window in a screen door at 917 Eighth St. The driver was treated on scene by Emergency Medical Service and refused to be transported ...

Follow-up on Neighborhood Watch set for Thursday

Those interested in forming a new Neighborhood Watch group in Great Bend are invited to attend a second preparatory/discussion meeting, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Rosewood Meeting Room, at 16th and Main. The first meeting of the group was held Nov. 17. Attendees were particularly concerned about a perceived large increase in incidence of burglaries in a northwest/midtown area of Great Bend.

Barton County Progressives announce first meeting

The first meeting of a new group, the Barton County Progressives, will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Burnside Room of the Great Bend Recreation Center, 1214 Stone St. Organized by Christina Stein and Marty Keenan, this meeting's speaker will be the Rev. Seth Svaty, a pastor from Sterling and brother of Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Josh Svaty. Afterward there will be a 20-minute talk and discussion.

Santa to visit VFW

Santa will be at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3111, 504 Washington Street at 2 p.m. on Dec. 11. The public is invited to bring children and grandchildren to visit Santa. Holiday treats for all that attend.

Burglars grab gold, electronics

Crime Stoppers of Barton County and Great Bend seeks information on a burglary at 1313 Cleveland St., Police Chief Dean Akings said. The residence was burglarized sometime between 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 24 and 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 28. Taken were jewelry, guns, a flat-screen television, two laptop computers, a Kruggrand (one-ounce gold coin), an iPod and an autographed Chiefs football. Loss was more than $19,600.

Senior Center open house to follow Friendship Meals Christmas dinner

The Friendship Meals Christmas dinner will be served at noon Thursday at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. The menu includes ham and sweet potatoes and the trimmings. Cost of the meal is a suggested contribution of $3 for people over 60 years of age. For people under 60 the meal is $5.

Grossardt to conduct guided tour of ‘Santas Around the World’

Kim Grossardt will lead a walking tour of the collection of Santas at Santa's Around the World on Wednesday. The tour will start at 1901 Lakin Ave. (next to the Crest Theater) at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Cost is $2. Sign up at the Senior Center by Tuesday to reserve a spot on the tour by Tuesday.

GBPL showing free movies

The Great Bend Public Library's monthly "Free Family Film Night" will feature the third in the series of movies staring Woody and his toy pals. The toys are mistakenly delivered to a day-care center instead of the attic right before Andy leaves for college, and it's up to Woody to convince the other toys that they weren't abandoned and to return home.
