GBMS band concert
The Great Bend Middle School Band Department will be having their spring band concerts on Thursday at the Great Bend Middle School gym. The 7th Grade Band the GBMS Jazz Ensemble concert will begin at 6:45 p.m. The 8th Grade Band and the GBMS Jazz Ensemble concert will begin at 8:15 p.m. The concerts are free and open to the public. The bands are directed by Kurtis Koch and assisted by Mark DeWald.
Grow gardens in small places

Barton Community College will host its sixth annual Sidewalk Art Contest May 8 and 9 on the sidewalk outside the Shafer Art Gallery.
Rec Commission’s Spring Style Show announced

Saddle Club offers Fun Day
Great Bend Saddle Club will have a Fun Day from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, at the Great Bend Rodeo Arena, located at the Expo grounds. There will be horse-related games and activities. Dance Theatre to benefit Barton pitcher Skylar Hill
Students of the Barton Community College Dance Theatre class will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 11 in the Fine Arts Auditorium and freewill donations will be accepted to benefit Barton baseball player Skylar Hill in his fight against cancer.
Chamber Coffee
This week's Chamber of Commerce Coffee will be hosted by Best Western Angus Inn, 2920 10th Street, at 9:30 a.m., Thursday. Ambassador in charge will be AJ Chrest with greeters Julie Smith and Jill Fitzsimmons. Coffee, refreshments and door prizes will be available.
Library announces programs
Great Bend Public Library will show "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" during Teen Movie Monday, at 4 p.m. on May 13. The free movie is open to students in grades 7-12. The library will have another free computer class from 2-3 p.m. on Thursday, May 16. The class will cover Beginner's Internet. Pre-registration is required. Poche dolls to be shown in Great Bend
281 Bypass Antiques, located at 1135 U.S. 281 Bypass in Great Bend, will host a reception for artist Dustin Poche from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday May 11.
Pork Association sponsoring blood drive
For the second year, the Kansas Pork Association is sponsoring several blood drives throughout Kansas with a goal of collecting 150 pints of blood. Because each pint could help save up to three lives, up to 450 patients could benefit.
BCC to host concert
The Barton Music Department awards 11 scholarships every year at about $1,000 each, and it couldn't be done without the help of the community's support of the annual Music Endowment Concert, which is set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 9 in the Fine Arts Auditorium.

The Barton County Arts Council will host a public forum with Brad Anderson, executive director of the Salina Arts and Humanities Commission, at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 4, in the Ray Schulz Library at the Barton County Historical Society Museum, 85 South U.S. 281, just south of Great Bend across the Arkansas River Bridge.

Rape reported in county
The Barton County Sheriff's Office is investigating a rape report. On Friday morning, a woman came to St. Rose Urgent Care and said she had been raped two days earlier. She said a man in a vehicle asked for directions then attacked her on a dirt road near the college (in the 100 block of SE 20 Ave. and NE 10 Road).

Benefit dinner and dance
A benefit dinner and dance for Laura Brown, who was diagnosed with cancer, will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Elks Lodge, 1120 Kansas. BCC trustees preparing for contract renewals

Man battered at convenience store made multiple calls to police
A Great Bend man was allegedly battered by four other people, Saturday night or early Sunday at the Kwik Shop at 24th and Main.
