A 39-year-old Alabama man was killed last Friday morning in a fiery two-vehicle accident in Stafford County, about 14 miles south of Great Bend.
Bev Komarek from the Barton County Historical Society will present "Quilts Plain and Fancy" at 1 p.m. Friday at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. From the earliest days in Barton County, each family had quilts as a necessity. Quilts were also an art form. Quilting is still part of our county, Komarek says. The Historical Society has a quilt collection of about 50 quilts.

The Barton Community College Foundation has announced net proceeds from its 32nd Annual Big Benefit Auction, "A Night in Napa." The final tally after expenses have been paid came to $75,836. All funds raised through the auction go to academic scholarships and program enhancements for the college, said Darnell Holopirek, Barton's executive director of institutional advancement. The Big Benefit Auction is the Foundation's longest running fund-raiser.
Trinity Lutheran Church invites the public to an outdoor screening of Disney and Pixar's animated movie, "Up," this Saturday. The event is free to the public and will start at 6:30 p.m. with snacks and crafts for children, followed by the movie at 7:30. Participants are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets, as the event will take place on the east lawn.

An Otis woman was injured Tuesday evening on a Barton County road, 4 miles north and 3 miles west of Galatia.
An attempted fraud was reported to the Barton County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday. Someone called a Barton County resident saying her grandson was in trouble in New Mexico and needed help. The woman hung up before finding out what kind of "help" was wanted, and instead called her grandson, who said he was fine.
