Library offers class on smartphones, apps

Nex-Tech will begin holding free technology workshops at the Great Bend Public Library with "Smartphone & Productivity Apps," at noon Wednesday, June 18. Space is limited so registration must be done in advance. Lunch will be provided.

Chamber Coffee canceled

The Great Bend Chamber of Commerce Coffee scheduled for Thursday morning has been canceled, due to the funeral service for Roger Brining. A coffee hosted by Doonan Peterbilt – GMC of Great Bend will be rescheduled at a later date.

Fees on Great Bend School Board agenda

Great Bend USD 428 Board of Education will meet at 5 p.m. on Monday, at the District Education Office, 201 S. Patton Road. Items on the agenda include budge approval, insurance review, approval of 2014-2015 licensed employees' agreement, clarification of GBHS Student Handbook, approval of elementary, middle school and high school fees for 2014-2015, Multi-Tiered System of Supports implementation plan for next year, drop-out report, update on HVAC project at Riley Elementary School, and report of licensed teacher resignations and licensed teacher appointments and administrative appointments.

Lorraine Main injured in one-vehicle accident

LORRAINE -- A Lorraine man was injured Saturday in a one vehicle accident in Ellsworth County. Kansas Highway Patrol reports the accident happened shortly before 8 p.m. at Ave. V and 10th Road, just south of the city of Lorraine. Christopher Scott Chamberlain, 26, was northbound on 10th Road, attempting to turn left or west onto Ave. V. Chamberlain said the rear wheels of the Chevy S-10 pickup he was driving locked up, sliding him into the ditch.

Miller trial moved to August

The jury trial for LaVeta D. Miller that was scheduled to start this month has been rescheduled for Aug. 18-22 in Barton County District Court. The trial had been scheduled for June 23-27, but the prosecution requested the new date because a witness was unavailable.

Branson parole denied

Robin Lee Branson, serving two life sentences for 1982 murders committed during liquor store robberies in Great Bend, has been denied parole. Branson was eligible for a hearing before the Kansas Prisoner Review Board in May, and public comments were accepted in April.

Seniors encouraged to take part in farmers market program

The Kansas Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program is a federal program that will provide $30 in checks for income-qualifying seniors age 60 and older, to purchase locally grown fresh vegetables and herbs, fruits and honey.

Annual Firefighters Run/Walk to raise money for MDA

The 12th annual Firefighters for MDA Run and Fun Walk will take place Saturday, June 7, at Great Bend Fire Station No. 1, 1205 Williams St. Registration opens at 7 a.m.; 5K and 10K runs are at 8 a.m. and the 1.8-mile Fun Walk starts at 8:15 a.m.

Barton Arts Council annual meeting announced

Barton County Arts Council will hold its annual meeting of voting members at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 19, in the Ray Schulz Research Library of the Barton County Historical Society, 85 South U.S. 281, Great Bend.

GBRC sponsors 'Golf Outing with Dad'

The Great Bend Recreation Commission wants to help dads start off the summer with a golf outing with their kids. GBRC's Golf Outing with Dad event is for children ages 8-16 years of age accompanied by an adult. The outing will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 1, at the StoneRidge Golf Course.

Family Swim Nights start June 3

Great Bend's Wetlands aquatic center is open daily, but Family Swim Nights do not start until Tuesday, June 3. This popular attraction is a great way to get the family in to swim after work hours and get a discounted rate, City Parks Director Terry Hoff said. Admission on Family Swim Nights is $2 per person and this takes place every Tuesday and Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.
