Western Kansas Train Show returns to Ellis County
HAYS - Thousands of model trains will be available to look at and buy at the fourth annual Western Kansas Train Show , Sept. 24-25 at the Ellis County Fairgrounds, 1344 Fairgrounds Road, in Hays.

Walnut Valley Potato Bar
'Potato Bar Season" will begin Sept. l8, at the Walnut Valley Senior Center in Rush Center. Beginning 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., slow baked potatoes, a large variety of salads and desserts to select from and coffee or tea are served. Planned dates are Sept. 18; Oct. 16; Nov. 13; Dec. 18; Jan. 15; Feb. 19; March 25; April 15; and May 20. The public is welcome. The proceeds help to maintain the former grade school building for use by the community.
GBHS Panther Booster Tailgate
The Great Bend High School Booster Club will hold a Tailgate from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, north of the Panther Athletic Center. Costs is $5 for a hambuger and brats dinner. The public is welcome.
Chamber Coffee
This week's Chamber of Commerce Coffee will be hosted by Sunflower Diversified Services, Inc., 8823 4th Street (plant location), at 9:30 a.m., Thursday. Ambassador in charge will be Connie Oetken with greeters Jill Fitzsimmons and Mark Judd. Coffee, doughnuts and door prizes will be available.

CPI wears red to remember 9/11
One of the biggest private employers in Barton County made its 9/11 commemoration visible on Friday, when employees at CPI Qualified Plan Consultants wore red T-shirts to work. BCC Big Benefit Auction passes $75,000 in proceeds
The final tally for the Barton Community College Foundation's 33rd Annual Big Benefit Auction is in at just over $75,000, which far exceeds the Foundation's initial goal of $45,000. Executive Director of the Foundation Darnell Holopirek said the auction's success is a reflection of the community's generosity. Defensive driving class can lower premiums

Thieves steal large mower
A riding lawn mower stolen from Lang Diesel Inc. in rural Ellinwood was too heavy for two people to push up onto a trailer, Great Bend Police Chief Dean Akings said. Akings, speaking for Crime Stoppers, said the mower was stolen from 15 SE 90 Ave. sometime between 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, and 8 a.m. on Friday.
No Parkinson’s Support Group meeting this month
The Parkinson's Support Group will not have a meeting this month. Sponsors of this new group have decided to meet every other month, so the next meeting will be June 25. The group plans to meet on the fourth Tuesday of even-numbered months (February, April, June, August, October and December).
Suspicious fire destroys trailer
PAWNEE ROCK - An abandoned mobile home in Pawnee Rock was destroyed by fire Monday, Sheriff Brian Bellendir said. The fire at 128 Rock St. was reported around 11:15 a.m. Great Bend Fire Department was called to assist the Pawnee Rock Fire Department, GBFD Chief Mike Napolitano said when they arrived the house was fully engulfed in flames. "The fire is suspicious in nature and the Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office was called," Bellendir said. ...
Library announces teen movie, free computer class
Great Bend Public Library will show "Annie" at the next Teen Movie Monday, 4 p.m. on May 20. The free movie is open to all students in grades 7-12. The library will have another free computer class at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21. The class will explain Goodreads, the largest world's largest website for readers and book recommendations. Rape reported in county
The Barton County Sheriff's Office is investigating a rape report. On Friday morning, a woman came to St. Rose Urgent Care and said she had been raped two days earlier. She said a man in a vehicle asked for directions then attacked her on a dirt road near the college (in the 100 block of SE 20 Ave. and NE 10 Road).
