High winds cause damage

The Barton County Sheriff's Office received multiple calls related to high winds Friday morning. A wheat truck's brakes were not engaged and the wind blew the truck into a house at 214 Jackson St. at 6:34 a.m. Wind damage to a power line pole on North U.S. 281 and NW 160 Road was reported at 8:03 a.m. Midwest Energy was contacted. Heartland Cancer Center Cancer Support Group to hold “Get Acquainted or Reacquainted” picnic

Heartland Cancer Center Cancer Support Group will hold a "Get Acquainted or Reacquainted" picnic at 6 p.m. on June 21 at Veterans Park west shelter house. Rec Commission will look at budget, capital outlay Monday

Crime Stoppers seeks info on NCRA burglary

A burglary that occurred at NCRA in Great Bend sometime between 3 p.m. on May 27 and 6:30 p.m. on June 3 resulted in more than $2,400 in property loss and damage. Great Bend Police Chief Dean Akings said someone broke into a new truck, stealing the stereo, steering column, wire harness and ignition. Aggravated assault outside gun store reported

Great Bend Police are investigating a reported aggravated assault that allegedly occurred at 1:15 p.m. Monday, outside J&L Coins & Jewelry, 1203 Main. After an incident in which one or more people attempting to sell a gun were told to leave, a 19-year-old male returned, holding a shotgun as he stood outside the business, wanting the business owner to come out. At last report no arrest had been made.

Meth found after driver flees from vehicle

A Barton County Sheriff's Officer was attempting to stop a vehicle on South U.S. 281 at SE 20 Road at 12:33 p.m. Saturday. A known person ran from the vehicle before being stopped, but officers weren't sure whether he was the driver. While checking in the vehicle for a registered owner, the officer found suspected methamphetamine and property that may have been stolen.

Thieves steal large mower

A riding lawn mower stolen from Lang Diesel Inc. in rural Ellinwood was too heavy for two people to push up onto a trailer, Great Bend Police Chief Dean Akings said. Akings, speaking for Crime Stoppers, said the mower was stolen from 15 SE 90 Ave. sometime between 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, and 8 a.m. on Friday.

​Suspicious fire destroys trailer

PAWNEE ROCK - An abandoned mobile home in Pawnee Rock was destroyed by fire Monday, Sheriff Brian Bellendir said. The fire at 128 Rock St. was reported around 11:15 a.m. Great Bend Fire Department was called to assist the Pawnee Rock Fire Department, GBFD Chief Mike Napolitano said when they arrived the house was fully engulfed in flames. Great Bend Public Library will show "Annie" at the next Teen Movie Monday, 4 p.m. on May 20. The free movie is open to all students in grades 7-12. The library will have another free computer class at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21. The class will explain Goodreads, the largest world's largest website for readers and book recommendations. Rape reported in county

The Barton County Sheriff's Office is investigating a rape report. On Friday morning, a woman came to St. Rose Urgent Care and said she had been raped two days earlier. She said a man in a vehicle asked for directions then attacked her on a dirt road near the college (in the 100 block of SE 20 Ave. and NE 10 Road).
