New grief support group forming

Rec Commission offers free program, ‘Becoming an Amateur Paleontologist’
The Great Bend Recreation Commission will host a free Stop 'N Learn Session, "Becoming an Amateur Paleontologist," from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, at the Great Bend Activity Center, 2715 18th St. Danielle Ricklefs, education coordinator at Great Bend's Brit Spaugh Zoo, will share her experiences in the field while becoming an amateur fossil hunter.
Fuel trailer stolen
The Barton County Sheriff's Office is investigating the theft of a 900-gallon fuel trailer from Straub International, 214 SW 40 Ave.
Chamber Coffee
This week's Chamber of Commerce Coffee will be hosted by The Gallery, 2021 Forest, at 9:30 a.m., Thursday. Ambassador in charge will be Judy Reed with greeters Allene Owen and Cindy Parr. Coffee, doughnuts and door prizes will be available.
BCC trustees to vote on audit bids
The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will consider audit bids when it meets at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, in the Seminar Room, F-30 of the Fine Arts Building. The administration has recommended awarding the bid to the low bidder, Adams, Brown, Beran & Ball. Registration due for Kansans Optimizing Health Workshop
The Kansans Optimizing Health Program (KOHP) is an interactive workshop that meets for 2.5 hours once a week for six weeks. This workshop will help participants set goals, develop a plan and track progress toward improving their health – one step at a time. 'Doubt' canceled due to weather
Dominican Sisters of Peace will not show the motion picture "Doubt" tonight as previously announced. Due to inclement weather, it has been canceled. This is part of the sisters' "Movies with a Message" series. Other upcoming movies are "Journey of the Universe" (2011) on March 22; and "The Big Year" (2011) on April 26.
Library announces March programs
Throughout the month of March the Great Bend Public Library will be featuring works by members of the St. Justa Pottery Guild from Barton Community College. A reception for the artists will be held on Saturday, March 2 from 1 to 3 p.m.
Chamber coffee canceled; ribbon cutting postponed
The Great Bend Chamber Coffee scheduled for Thursday morning has been canceled due to the inclement weather. The ribbon cutting for Computer 911 has also been postponed.

Great Bend Public Library, 1409 Williams St., will show the motion picture "Total Recall" at 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, for Teen Movie Monday. The free program is open to all students in grades 7-12.

Author Rebecca Willman Gernon will visit the Great Bend Public Library, 1409 Williams, at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, to speak on the issue of "Two Sides of the Same Story: Deaf in a Hearing Family." Defensive driving class can lower premiums
The Great Bend Recreation Commission, Commission on Aging and Barton County Farm Bureau will host a defensive driving course next week at the Great Bend Activity Center, 2715 18th St. Classes run from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, May 20, and Tuesday, May 21.

Thieves steal large mower
A riding lawn mower stolen from Lang Diesel Inc. in rural Ellinwood was too heavy for two people to push up onto a trailer, Great Bend Police Chief Dean Akings said. Akings, speaking for Crime Stoppers, said the mower was stolen from 15 SE 90 Ave. sometime between 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, and 8 a.m. on Friday.
No Parkinson’s Support Group meeting this month
The Parkinson's Support Group will not have a meeting this month. Sponsors of this new group have decided to meet every other month, so the next meeting will be June 25. The group plans to meet on the fourth Tuesday of even-numbered months (February, April, June, August, October and December).
Suspicious fire destroys trailer
PAWNEE ROCK - An abandoned mobile home in Pawnee Rock was destroyed by fire Monday, Sheriff Brian Bellendir said. The fire at 128 Rock St. was reported around 11:15 a.m. Great Bend Fire Department was called to assist the Pawnee Rock Fire Department, GBFD Chief Mike Napolitano said when they arrived the house was fully engulfed in flames. "The fire is suspicious in nature and the Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office was called," Bellendir said. ...
Library announces teen movie, free computer class
Great Bend Public Library will show "Annie" at the next Teen Movie Monday, 4 p.m. on May 20. The free movie is open to all students in grades 7-12. The library will have another free computer class at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21. The class will explain Goodreads, the largest world's largest website for readers and book recommendations. Rape reported in county
The Barton County Sheriff's Office is investigating a rape report. On Friday morning, a woman came to St. Rose Urgent Care and said she had been raped two days earlier. She said a man in a vehicle asked for directions then attacked her on a dirt road near the college (in the 100 block of SE 20 Ave. and NE 10 Road).
