First Legislative Coffee canceled

The first Legislative Coffee of 2012, originally scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 28, in Great Bend, has been canceled due to a conflict with Kansas Day events. Legislative coffees are still scheduled for Feb. 25 and March 24.

This week's Chamber of Commerce Coffee will be hosted by St. Joseph Family Medicine/Golden Belt Home Health & Hospice, 3520 Lakin – St. Joseph Family Medicine location, one block south of St. Rose Ambulatory and Surgery Center, at 9:30 a.m., Thursday. USD 428 Board of Education meeting

USD 428 Board of Education will meet at 5 p.m. on Monday at the District Education Center, 201 South Patton Road. Items on the agenda include approval of the 2010-2011 business audit, updated information on the district's Shady Grove property, approval of roofing bids for Park School and Great Bend Middle School, report on 7th grade competitive sports, 2012-2013 program of studies, and an update on plans for replacement of the GBMS floor coverings.

GBRC to hear report on Noon/AM basketball program

Chuck Pike will present information on the Great Bend Recreation Commission Foundation and the GBRC Noon/AM basketball program when the recreation commission board meets at 4 p.m. Monday at the Carl Soden Recreation Center, 1214 Stone St.

Free computer classes offered at Great Bend library

The Great Bend Public Library will offer free introductory computer classes to the public this month. Hour-long sessions are available at 3 and 7 p.m. for each class, GBPL Marketing Director Jennifer King said.

BCC trustees plan trip to Topeka

Three trustees from Barton Community College will travel to Topeka next week with Barton President Dr. Carl Heilman. The trip to meet with legislators is in lieu of the trustees' monthly study session, which otherwise would have been held on Jan. 5. College officials will travel to Topeka Wednesday morning and return on Thursday.

Car making U-turn hit on K-96

Two people from Bazine were taken to the Ness County Hospital on Wednesday after a car struck another car making a U-turn on K-96, half a mile west of Bazine in Ness County.

Vehicles burglarized on Christmas day

Crime Stoppers is seeking information about Christmas-day burglaries that occurred in Great Bend. Police Chief Dean Akings reports that between 1 and 8 p.m. on Dec. 25, vehicles parked in the apartment complex at 717 Coolidge St. were burglarized. Items taken included an Alpine stereo; a Springfield 9 mm handgun with two magazines, holster, pouch and ammunition; a Blade Scout remote control helicopter; a Python keyless entry system; cigarettes; hand tools; and cash. Loss exceeded $3,100.

Recreation commission starts its 2012 exercise classes

Grief support group starts Jan. 16

Seventh-day Adventist School taking final orders on fruit

The Seventh-day Adventist School is taking orders for its last ship of citrus fruit for the 2011-12 year.
