If you see local youths being hauled around on Friday in police cars or in the back of ambulances, it is not because they are in trouble with the law or injured in an accident. Approximately 70 seventh and eighth graders are participating in the annual City of Great Bend Youth Academy.

STAFFORD - U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (Rep-KS) has canceled a planned trip to Stafford Friday. The recess was cancelled and the Senate was called back in session so he will be in Washington, D.C. However, they do plan on rescheduling in Stafford although a time is not yet set.
This week's Chamber of Commerce Coffee will be hosted by Dr. Mark Judd, O.D., 1701 K-96 Highway, at 9:30 a.m., Thursday. Ambassador in charge will be John Sullivan with greeters Ron Koelsch and Shawn Panzer. Coffee, doughnuts and door prizes will be available.
A free program, "Employers and Job Seekers Ages 55 and Older," will be offered at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave.
The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will hold a retreat from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday and from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Thursday in room A-113 of the Administration Building on campus. The purposes of the retreat are to review college policies and service operations, development of the fiscal year 2012 budget development and strategic planning. Although all board meetings are open to the public, no action will be taken.
On June 1 the Great Bend Tribune published a story about a 9-year-old boy being hit by a hit-and-run vehicle at 6:40 p.m. on May 27. The Tribune reported that the boy was mowing, which was an error. He had finished mowing and was pushing the mower when a car driven by Tabatha Bomgardner, 25, of Great Bend turned the corner at 12th and Harrison, running over the mower and injuring the boy.
Renewal notices for Great Bend High School reserved season football tickets have been e-mailed to current ticket holders. The GBHS Activities Office asks holders to watch for this e-mail, which includes instructions for renewal. There are a few openings in the July 7 Kansas Wetlands Education Center "Dancing Dragonflies" morning program for kids ages 4 to 7. The program runs from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Center. Call KWEC at 1-877-243-9268 by July 1 to register for the program or for more information.

ST. JOHN - The St. John Sunday Jam, an open jam session for area music lovers, is on summer break and will not be meeting this Sunday. The event, which used to be called Radium City Limits until the venue changed, meets on the first Sunday of every month, October through June, in a building located in the St. John town square.
A fire at 3400 Lakin Ave. caused an estimated $12,000 in damage, Great Bend Fire Chief Mike Napolitano said.
USD 428 Board of Education will meet at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the District Education Center, 201 South Patton Road. Items on the agenda include approval of end-of-year budget expenditures, transfers and balances and the 2011-2012 budget update.

The Great Bend Recreation Commission will offer an American Red Cross lifeguard certification course March 16-21 at the Barton Community College pool. GBRC offers the ARC Water Park Lifeguard training class. This class includes CPR for the professional rescuer, AED, and first aid. This is a 24-31-hour course.
Barton Community College will host a blood drive from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28 in the Technical Building in room T-186, the Case New Holland Training Building. All types of blood are needed.
Auditions for the Great Bend Community Theatre production of "Becky's New Car," by Steven Dietz, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 9, and 7 p.m. Monday, March 10, at the Crest Theatre, 1905 Lakin Ave. Note this is one week later than previously announced.
