Benefit dinner and dance

A benefit dinner and dance for Laura Brown, who was diagnosed with cancer, will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Elks Lodge, 1120 Kansas. A silent auction will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Proceeds will go to help pay medical expenses. Man battered at convenience store made multiple calls to police

A Great Bend man was allegedly battered by four other people, Saturday night or early Sunday at the Kwik Shop at 24th and Main. The Great Bend Police Department is investigating after viewing a surveillance video of the altercation. GBMS band concert

The Great Bend Middle School Band Department will be having their spring band concerts on Thursday at the Great Bend Middle School gym. The 7th Grade Band the GBMS Jazz Ensemble concert will begin at 6:45 p.m. The 8th Grade Band and the GBMS Jazz Ensemble concert will begin at 8:15 p.m. The concerts are free and open to the public. Library announces programs

Great Bend Public Library will show "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" during Teen Movie Monday, at 4 p.m. on May 13. The free movie is open to students in grades 7-12. Pork Association sponsoring blood drive

For the second year, the Kansas Pork Association is sponsoring several blood drives throughout Kansas with a goal of collecting 150 pints of blood. Because each pint could help save up to three lives, up to 450 patients could benefit.

Thieves steal large mower

A riding lawn mower stolen from Lang Diesel Inc. in rural Ellinwood was too heavy for two people to push up onto a trailer, Great Bend Police Chief Dean Akings said. Akings, speaking for Crime Stoppers, said the mower was stolen from 15 SE 90 Ave. sometime between 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, and 8 a.m. on Friday.

The Parkinson's Support Group will not have a meeting this month. Sponsors of this new group have decided to meet every other month, so the next meeting will be June 25. The group plans to meet on the fourth Tuesday of even-numbered months (February, April, June, August, October and December).

​Suspicious fire destroys trailer

PAWNEE ROCK - An abandoned mobile home in Pawnee Rock was destroyed by fire Monday, Sheriff Brian Bellendir said. The fire at 128 Rock St. was reported around 11:15 a.m. Great Bend Fire Department was called to assist the Pawnee Rock Fire Department, GBFD Chief Mike Napolitano said when they arrived the house was fully engulfed in flames. Rape reported in county

The Barton County Sheriff's Office is investigating a rape report. On Friday morning, a woman came to St. Rose Urgent Care and said she had been raped two days earlier. She said a man in a vehicle asked for directions then attacked her on a dirt road near the college (in the 100 block of SE 20 Ave. and NE 10 Road).
