ST. JOHN - Barton Community College will offer outreach classes for the spring 2014 semester at St. John High School, 406 N. Monroe.
The Great Bend Public Library will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, as well as Tuesday, Dec. 30, and Wednesday, Jan. 1 for the New Year's holiday.
This week's Chamber of Commerce Coffee will be hosted by Cornerstone Interiors, 1405 Main, at 9:30 a.m., Thursday. Host will be Jim Vopat with greeters Robert Rugan and Marty Steinert. Coffee, refreshments and door prizes will be available.
The Great Bend Recreation Commission has a few programs for those days school is not in session over the holidays. Students can meet their friends at the Activity Center for some fun on Monday, Dec. 23 and/or Monday, Dec. 30. Each day will include crafts, games, snacks, bowling at Walnut Bowl and fun organized activities. Amber Koch, Great Bend-Brit Spaugh Zoo education coordinator, will present an animal and activities on Dec. 30. GBRC will provide pizza on the 23rd and sub sandwiches on the 30th, along with beverages for lunch.
Barton Community College's Silver Cougar Club is offering a chance to learn all about Microsoft Word with a course scheduled for 1-4 p.m. on Wednesdays, Jan. 8 – Feb. 12 at the Center for Adult Education, 1025 Main St., Great Bend in room D-107.
The Great Bend Seventh-day Adventist Elementary School will present its annual Christmas program Wednesday evening at 7:15.
Auditions for the Great Bend Community Theatre production of "Neighborhood Crime Watch," by Craig Alpaugh, will be held Jan. 5 at 2 p.m. and Jan. 6 at 7 p.m. at the Crest Theater, 1905 Lakin Ave., Great Bend. Roger Fry, author of "The Chronicles of John Grant," will visit the Great Bend Public Library on Wednesday, Dec. 18, to launch his new book. The event will begin with a book reading at 6 p.m. This will be followed by a book signing. Copies of the book will be available for sale. Barton Community College offices will close for holiday break Thursday, Dec. 19. All offices will reopen Friday, Jan. 3. Spring semester classes will begin Monday, Jan. 13.

The Great Bend Recreation Commission will host a free Stop 'N Learn Session at the Brit Spaugh Zoo on Tuesday, Dec. 10. "Jungle Bell Rock" runs for noon to 1 p.m. Zoo Education Coordinator Amber Koch will explain how the "cold-blooded" animals eat, sleep and live. From basking on rocks to hanging from trees, these reptiles can teach humans a thing or two about how they keep warm.
The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will meet at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, in room F-30, the "Seminar Room" of the Fine Arts Building. Approval of a revitalization interlocal agreement with the city of Claflin is on the agenda. Similar plans have been in place for several years.
