Library announces holiday hours
Great Bend Public Library's hours for this week are: 1-5 p.m. today; noon to 9 p.m. Monday; 1:30-9 p.m. Tuesday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Two accidental shootings reported in recent days
The Barton County Sheriff's Office received a report of an accidental shooting on the outskirts of Great Bend at 12:54 a.m. Tuesday. Adam Koch, 27, from Pratt, was taken to Great Bend Regional Hospital by private vehicle after Cole Frimmel, 24, from Great Bend, accidentally discharged a Remington Wingmaster 12-gauge shotgun. ‘History of Cheyenne Bottoms’ to be presented at Great Bend Senior Center
The Great Bend Recreation Commission will host a free program on the history of Cheyenne Bottoms at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, at the Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. Eric Giesing, an educator with the Kansas Wetlands Education Center and Fort Hays State University, will present a brief history of the Bottoms. Afterward, participants will be invited to share interesting stories of their lives while growing up in the Barton County area.
Macro photography program rescheduled
The Great Bend Recreation Commission has rescheduled the Stop 'N Learn Session titled, "Macro Photography" to Tuesday, Dec. 13t, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Great Bend Activity Center, 2715 18th St. This free program was originally scheduled for this week.

Roofing bids on BCC agenda
The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will consider roofing bids for the Administration Building when it meets at 4 p.m. Thursday in the Seminar Room, F-30 of the Fine Arts Building. Other items on the agenda include a monitoring report on regional workforce needs, financial aid presentation, personnel and an executive session for the discussion of personnel matters.

Blood donors could win $1,000 gift card
WICHITA - Donors who present to give blood between May 23 and 31 in honor of Memorial Day could win one of five $1,000 American Express gift cards, the American Red Cross announced. In addition, their donations will honor those who gave their life for our country and support those in need of care. The Red Cross serves about 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country, including many Veterans Affairs medical centers.
GBHS cookbook now available
The Panther Paw Restaurant staff and management at Great Bend High School have produced a cookbook containing recipes of dishes served throughout the school year.

Defensive driving class can lower premiums
The Great Bend Recreation Commission, Commission on Aging and Barton County Farm Bureau will host a defensive driving course next week at the Great Bend Activity Center, 2715 18th St. Classes run from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, May 20, and Tuesday, May 21.
Greyhounds are topic of free program
History buff Joe Boley will give a program on greyhound racing at 1 p.m. Friday at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. Boley's free program explains how Great Bend is part of greyhound racing history.
Thieves steal large mower
A riding lawn mower stolen from Lang Diesel Inc. in rural Ellinwood was too heavy for two people to push up onto a trailer, Great Bend Police Chief Dean Akings said. Akings, speaking for Crime Stoppers, said the mower was stolen from 15 SE 90 Ave. sometime between 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, and 8 a.m. on Friday.
No Parkinson’s Support Group meeting this month
The Parkinson's Support Group will not have a meeting this month. Sponsors of this new group have decided to meet every other month, so the next meeting will be June 25. The group plans to meet on the fourth Tuesday of even-numbered months (February, April, June, August, October and December).
Suspicious fire destroys trailer
PAWNEE ROCK - An abandoned mobile home in Pawnee Rock was destroyed by fire Monday, Sheriff Brian Bellendir said. The fire at 128 Rock St. was reported around 11:15 a.m. Great Bend Fire Department was called to assist the Pawnee Rock Fire Department, GBFD Chief Mike Napolitano said when they arrived the house was fully engulfed in flames. "The fire is suspicious in nature and the Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office was called," Bellendir said. ...
Library announces teen movie, free computer class
Great Bend Public Library will show "Annie" at the next Teen Movie Monday, 4 p.m. on May 20. The free movie is open to all students in grades 7-12. The library will have another free computer class at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21. The class will explain Goodreads, the largest world's largest website for readers and book recommendations. Rape reported in county
The Barton County Sheriff's Office is investigating a rape report. On Friday morning, a woman came to St. Rose Urgent Care and said she had been raped two days earlier. She said a man in a vehicle asked for directions then attacked her on a dirt road near the college (in the 100 block of SE 20 Ave. and NE 10 Road).
