9.12 Tea Party meeting
The 9.12 Tea Party's monthly meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday at The Front Door, 1615 Tenth St. in Great Bend. The meeting is open to the public and admission is free.
Healthy Heart program date corrected
Note: The date for this event has been corrected. - Ed The Great Bend Recreation Commission will host a free program titled "Healthier Heart" at 1 p.m. Friday, April 19, at the Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. Dr. Gerasimos Stavens, MD, St. Rose Ambulatory & Surgery Center, will discuss cardiac rehabilitation, exercise and cardiovascular health, and preventative care. Dr. Stavens will also answer questions.
Trustees to review contracts
The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will review faculty contracts during its April study session, set for 4 p.m. Thursday in room F-30 of the Fine Arts Building. Other items on the agenda include the creation of a certificate program in entrepreneurship, eduKan report, the 2013-14 board meeting schedule, marketing plan, board self-evaluations and iPad training for trustees.
Veterans Service Representative visit
A Veterans Service Representative from the Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs will be at the Great Bend Kansas Works Center at 1025 Main Street from 9:30 a.m. -2 p.m. on Thursday April 11th to assist veterans and their families in applying for VA benefits. The Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs is a state agency that provides free assistance to veterans and their families with veterans' benefits. Call 785-625-8532 for more information.
Stop 'N Learn topic: Spring flowers
A free Stop 'N Learn program titled "Spring Flowers" will be offered at noon Wednesday at the Great Bend Activity Center, 2715 18th St. Jerry Esfeld will talk about a variety of perennials and annuals available to plant in flower gardens this year. Topics will include selecting the perfect flowers, fertilizing, mulching and care, plus a question-and-answer time.
Softball, baseball rules on agenda
The Great Bend Recreation Commission board will continue its discussion on youth baseball and softball rules Monday. The board will meet at 4 p.m. at the Carl Soden Recreation Center, 1214 Stone St. It is expected to vote on any rule changes for this summer's ball teams. Health insurance and workers compensation insurance are also listed as action items on the meeting agenda, along with an item labeled, "Imagination Playground."
Barton Community College invites community to celebrate Poetry Month
Barton Community College will celebrate Poetry month through April by offering community members a chance to share original poetry or to recite others poetry at live reading sessions from 12:15-12:45 p.m. on April 10, 17 and 24 in the Student Union as well as an opportunity to upload their own poetry to Barton's website.
Crime Stoppers offers reward for info on vandalism
Between 11 p.m. on March 28 and 2:51 a.m. on March 29, 11 mailboxes were destroyed. Five were at apartments at 2314 31st St., and six more were in the 2000 block of 32nd St. in Great Bend. Police Chief Dean Akings said each box was valued at $50, for a total loss of $550. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers, 792-1300 or 888-305-1300.
BCC orchestra to perform at Shafer Art Gallery
The Barton Community College Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 11, at the Shafer Art Gallery. The theme for the concert is "Military Music for Orchestra" featuring works by Mozart, Haydn and Schubert. Other orchestral works include Mozart's "Symphony No. 15 in G Major" and an adaptation of Vivaldi's "Double Concerto for Two Violins in A Minor." Admission is free. A reception will follow the performance.
Community Choir and Barton Orchestra to present 'On Broadway'
The Central Kansas Community Choir accompanied by the Barton Community College Orchestra will present a concert themed "On Broadway" at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 8, at First United Methodist Church, 2123 Forest Ave., Great Bend. The group will perform substantial medleys from popular Broadway titles such as "Les Miserables" and "The Lion King," as well as single selections from "Porgy and Bess," the "Wizard of Oz" and more.
BCC theater to perform Kansas history drama
Barton Community College's theater department will host "Kansas Drama" at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 11, in the Community Room in the Learning Resource Center. Barton theater students will perform "Settling the Kansas Territory" from the "Shared Stories of the Civil War" reader's theater project.

The next Great Bend Chamber of Commerce Coffee will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, April 4, at Northview Nursery and Landscape, 172 North U.S. 281. There will be coffee, refreshments and door prizes. Jim Vopat is the ambassador in charge, Randy Bahe and Shay Kasselman are greeters.
New sculpture to be unveiled
A metal art sculpture at the Great Bend Sports Complex will be unveiled at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, as a kick-off for the first high school baseball game of the season. The public is invited.
Winners of Congressional High School Arts Competition to be announced Saturday
RUSSELL - Entries are arriving at the Deines Cultural Center for the 2013 First Congressional High School Arts Competition. Thieves steal large mower
A riding lawn mower stolen from Lang Diesel Inc. in rural Ellinwood was too heavy for two people to push up onto a trailer, Great Bend Police Chief Dean Akings said. Akings, speaking for Crime Stoppers, said the mower was stolen from 15 SE 90 Ave. sometime between 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, and 8 a.m. on Friday.
No Parkinson’s Support Group meeting this month
The Parkinson's Support Group will not have a meeting this month. Sponsors of this new group have decided to meet every other month, so the next meeting will be June 25. The group plans to meet on the fourth Tuesday of even-numbered months (February, April, June, August, October and December).
Suspicious fire destroys trailer
PAWNEE ROCK - An abandoned mobile home in Pawnee Rock was destroyed by fire Monday, Sheriff Brian Bellendir said. The fire at 128 Rock St. was reported around 11:15 a.m. Great Bend Fire Department was called to assist the Pawnee Rock Fire Department, GBFD Chief Mike Napolitano said when they arrived the house was fully engulfed in flames. "The fire is suspicious in nature and the Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office was called," Bellendir said. ...
Library announces teen movie, free computer class
Great Bend Public Library will show "Annie" at the next Teen Movie Monday, 4 p.m. on May 20. The free movie is open to all students in grades 7-12. The library will have another free computer class at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21. The class will explain Goodreads, the largest world's largest website for readers and book recommendations. Rape reported in county
The Barton County Sheriff's Office is investigating a rape report. On Friday morning, a woman came to St. Rose Urgent Care and said she had been raped two days earlier. She said a man in a vehicle asked for directions then attacked her on a dirt road near the college (in the 100 block of SE 20 Ave. and NE 10 Road).
