BCC Big Benefit Auction passes $75,000 in proceeds

The final tally for the Barton Community College Foundation's 33rd Annual Big Benefit Auction is in at just over $75,000, which far exceeds the Foundation's initial goal of $45,000. New trial date set for Ney

The trial dates for Shawn Ney were changed Tuesday to Feb. 27 through March 2, 2012. Last week, the office of Attorney General Derek Schmidt announced a January trial date, but that was changed because the defense counsel had a scheduling conflict. Ney is charged with the first-degree murder of Steven Calderwood, attempted first-degree murder of Sarah Ney, and aggravated burglary, all stemming from events on July 10, 2010, in Barton County.

Crime Stoppers: Wire thieves damaged AT&T generator

Crime Stoppers of Barton County is seeking information about damage done to a generator at 1300 Stone St. in Great Bend, Police Chief Dean Akings said. The generator, which belongs to AT&T, was damaged sometime between July 6 and Aug. 23. "Thieves cut 50 feet of 5-conductor copper cable and fled with the cable," Akings reported in a statement for Crime Stoppers. Loss was $5,000 and the generator is not functional ...

GBMS band concert

The Great Bend Middle School Band Department will be having their spring band concerts on Thursday at the Great Bend Middle School gym.
