BCC trustees to discuss budget

Two injured in Stafford County accident
Two people were taken to Via Chriti Medical Center's St. Francis Hospital in Wichita on Friday after two vehicles collided on U.S. 50 at the U.S. 281 junction in Stafford County, 2.5 miles south of St. John. Heartland Cancer Center Support Group to meet Tuesday
Heartland Cancer Center's monthly Cancer Support Group will meet at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, at the center, 204 Cleveland St., Great Bend. This will be a sharing meeting. Cancer support meetings and activities are open to all individuals currently fighting the disease, cancer survivors, or families and friends of those involved in all phases of the cancer fight. Huelskamp announces Kansas schedule
Congressman Tim Huelskamp said he plans to visit Barton County and other central Kansas counties before the end of the month. Visits to St. Francis, Atwood and Seneca that were scheduled for next week were canceled after it was announced that the House will be in session July 19-22, which was supposed to be a constituent work week. Central Prairie Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D), Council and Honor Flights will hold an open house on July 14 in their new offices located at 1916 16th Street, in Great Bend. Refreshments will be serviced from 3 to 5 p.m. with a council meeting at 6:30 p.m.

Area law enforcement officers routinely receive reports of animals that have strayed into county roads, or of objects that are impeding traffic. Holding a public hearing for the 2011-12 budget is on the agenda Monday for the Great Bend Recreation Commission Board of Directors. The board will meet at 4 p.m. at the Carl Soden Recreation Center, 1214 Stone St. Also on the agenda is the appointment of the board treasurer, and information about co-ed softball rules.
City Youth Academy continues Friday
If you see local youths being hauled around on Friday in police cars or in the back of ambulances, it is not because they are in trouble with the law or injured in an accident. Approximately 70 seventh and eighth graders are participating in the annual City of Great Bend Youth Academy. The academy gives youths a close-up view of city departments, and concludes with an idea exchange with city leaders. ...

Sen. Jerry Moran cancels Stafford visit
STAFFORD - U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (Rep-KS) has canceled a planned trip to Stafford Friday. The recess was cancelled and the Senate was called back in session so he will be in Washington, D.C. However, they do plan on rescheduling in Stafford although a time is not yet set.

USD 428 has partnered with Harris Connect to produce an alumni directory. Post cards, phone calls and e-mails may be forthcoming this summer. This is a reputable company that the district has worked with for the past 20 years.
Defensive driving class can lower premiums
The Great Bend Recreation Commission, Commission on Aging and Barton County Farm Bureau will host a defensive driving course next week at the Great Bend Activity Center, 2715 18th St. Classes run from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, May 20, and Tuesday, May 21.
Greyhounds are topic of free program
History buff Joe Boley will give a program on greyhound racing at 1 p.m. Friday at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. Boley's free program explains how Great Bend is part of greyhound racing history.
Thieves steal large mower
A riding lawn mower stolen from Lang Diesel Inc. in rural Ellinwood was too heavy for two people to push up onto a trailer, Great Bend Police Chief Dean Akings said. Akings, speaking for Crime Stoppers, said the mower was stolen from 15 SE 90 Ave. sometime between 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, and 8 a.m. on Friday.
No Parkinson’s Support Group meeting this month
The Parkinson's Support Group will not have a meeting this month. Sponsors of this new group have decided to meet every other month, so the next meeting will be June 25. The group plans to meet on the fourth Tuesday of even-numbered months (February, April, June, August, October and December).
Suspicious fire destroys trailer
PAWNEE ROCK - An abandoned mobile home in Pawnee Rock was destroyed by fire Monday, Sheriff Brian Bellendir said. The fire at 128 Rock St. was reported around 11:15 a.m. Great Bend Fire Department was called to assist the Pawnee Rock Fire Department, GBFD Chief Mike Napolitano said when they arrived the house was fully engulfed in flames. "The fire is suspicious in nature and the Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office was called," Bellendir said. ...
Library announces teen movie, free computer class
Great Bend Public Library will show "Annie" at the next Teen Movie Monday, 4 p.m. on May 20. The free movie is open to all students in grades 7-12. The library will have another free computer class at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21. The class will explain Goodreads, the largest world's largest website for readers and book recommendations. Rape reported in county
The Barton County Sheriff's Office is investigating a rape report. On Friday morning, a woman came to St. Rose Urgent Care and said she had been raped two days earlier. She said a man in a vehicle asked for directions then attacked her on a dirt road near the college (in the 100 block of SE 20 Ave. and NE 10 Road).
