There are a few openings in the July 7 Kansas Wetlands Education Center "Dancing Dragonflies" morning program for kids ages 4 to 7. The program runs from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Center. Call KWEC at 1-877-243-9268 by July 1 to register for the program or for more information.

St. John Sunday Jams on hiatus for summer
ST. JOHN - The St. John Sunday Jam, an open jam session for area music lovers, is on summer break and will not be meeting this Sunday. The event, which used to be called Radium City Limits until the venue changed, meets on the first Sunday of every month, October through June, in a building located in the St. John town square. Fire damages Great Bend home
A fire at 3400 Lakin Ave. caused an estimated $12,000 in damage, Great Bend Fire Chief Mike Napolitano said. Fire trucks were dispatched at 6:10 p.m. Friday and found the main electrical line coming to the house had completely burned through and was arcing on the ground. USD 428 Board of Education will meet at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the District Education Center, 201 South Patton Road. Items on the agenda include approval of end-of-year budget expenditures, transfers and balances and the 2011-2012 budget update.
Enrollment open for Barton's Skype summer workshop
Barton Community College will offer a summer workshop for Skype from 5-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, in the Technical Building, T-117. To enroll in this workshop, contact Janet Kirmer, 620-792-9294 or 1-866-813-2460. Barton's Business Technology and Community Education secretary Renetta Furrow will teach the workshop. The fee is $35, or $25 for those also enrolling in the Quickbooks summer workshop.
Clapsaddle to bring artifact trunk to historical society
Barton County Historical Society will host its June meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Two dogs will visit the Great Bend Public Library today for a Summer Reading Program activity. Pam Jones, animal control officer from the City of Hays, will bring her therapy dogs Hank and Jacques at 2 p.m. to teach children about dogs. Eric Coulbourne, children's librarian, said Jones will be speaking about animal safety during disasters such as tornadoes. She will walk the kids through making a disaster plan for their ...

High winds cause damage
The Barton County Sheriff's Office received multiple calls related to high winds Friday morning. A wheat truck's brakes were not engaged and the wind blew the truck into a house at 214 Jackson St. at 6:34 a.m. Wind damage to a power line pole on North U.S. 281 and NW 160 Road was reported at 8:03 a.m. Midwest Energy was contacted. Heartland Cancer Center Cancer Support Group will hold a "Get Acquainted or Reacquainted" picnic at 6 p.m. on June 21 at Veterans Park west shelter house. Man battered at convenience store made multiple calls to police
A Great Bend man was allegedly battered by four other people, Saturday night or early Sunday at the Kwik Shop at 24th and Main. GBMS band concert
The Great Bend Middle School Band Department will be having their spring band concerts on Thursday at the Great Bend Middle School gym. The 7th Grade Band the GBMS Jazz Ensemble concert will begin at 6:45 p.m. The 8th Grade Band and the GBMS Jazz Ensemble concert will begin at 8:15 p.m. The concerts are free and open to the public. The bands are directed by Kurtis Koch and assisted by Mark DeWald.
