Starting around Wednesday, the Kansas Department of Transportation will begin an asphalt roadway crack sealing project on K-4 in Rush County. This project runs from the Ness/Rush County line to the Rush/Barton County line, said Martin Miller with KDOT.
RUSSELL - The regularly scheduled "Pickin' at the Deines" will not be held this Sunday, due to the large number of participants who will be at the Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival in Winfield. Pickin' at the Deines is a jam session and pot-luck dinner that is usually held on the third Sunday of each month. The next one will be on Oct. 21. The jam session will start at 3 p.m. and the supper at 5 p.m.
The theft of a pink pig yard ornament from outside a Great Bend apartment is the subject of this week's Crime Stoppers report. Police Chief Dean Akings said that sometime between 5 p.m. on Aug. 31 and noon on Sept. 1, a concrete pig was stolen from 3900 Forest Ave., Apartment 8. A Great Bend man was booked into the Barton County Jail on Sunday on an aggravated battery charge. Jesus G. Zendejas-Luna was reportedly involved in a domestic altercation with his ex-wife around 6 p.m. in the 2800 block of 20th St., and he allegedly took off in his pickup, dragging the victim. The theft of a Thompson submachine gun from a Great Bend residence has Crime Stoppers asking the public for information. Police Chief Dean Akings reports the gun, valued at $1,700, was stolen sometime between 4 p.m. on Aug. 27 and 5:11 p.m. on the 28th, from a home at 2821 16th St. "This .45 caliber automatic machine gun was a model T1SB with serial number KH2157," Akings said. The Great Bend Recreation Commission will hear a report on new software and the time line for future computer enhancements when the board meets at 4 p.m. Monday at the Carl Soden Recreation Center, 1214 Stone St. There will also be a report on enrollment in youth football, soccer and volleyball.
