Library announces programs

Great Bend Public Library will show "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" during Teen Movie Monday, at 4 p.m. on May 13. The free movie is open to students in grades 7-12. The library will have another free computer class from 2-3 p.m. on Thursday, May 16. The class will cover Beginner's Internet. Pre-registration is required. Pork Association sponsoring blood drive

For the second year, the Kansas Pork Association is sponsoring several blood drives throughout Kansas with a goal of collecting 150 pints of blood. Because each pint could help save up to three lives, up to 450 patients could benefit.

Heartland Farm offers spring blessings, open house

WICHITA - May 8 is World Red Cross Day, and the American Red Cross encourages eligible individuals to celebrate by donating lifesaving blood in their communities. The need is constant, and all blood types are needed, especially O negative, B negative and A negative.

‘Raptor Rehab’ is Thursday

Recent cases of vehicle and store windows being shot with BB or pellet guns has caused more than $8,100, Great Bend Police Chief Dean Akings said. Crime Stoppers is seeking information about recent cases of criminal damage. The department has taken 25 such cases between April 18 and 20. Motorist treated at accident scene

The Barton County Sheriff's Office responded to an injury accident shortly before 5 p.m. Monday in the 200 block of north U.S. 281. A Chevrolet Blazer driven by Emelia Fricks, 17, Hoisington, ran into the back of a Chevrolet Colorado pickup driven by Elizabeth Mater, 47, of Olmitz, as Mater was slowing for another vehicle that was turning at a private drive. Mater was treated at the scene but not transported.

Learn to prevent falls

Program offered on pool, pond care

"Pond Care 101" will be presented 5:30-7 p.m. on Thursday, June 20, at the Great Bend Recreation Center, 1214 Stone St. This free presentation by Shawna Beran includes tips on maintaining a pool or backyard pond. A Great Bend home was burglarized twice during the month of May, Police Chief Dean Akings said. The house at 1604 Monroe St. was first burglarized between 9 and 9:30 p.m. on May 9. Man dies after motorcycle hits deer

A 38-year-old Ellinwood man died Monday night after the motorcycle he was driving hit at deer on U.S. 56. Daniel J. Otipoby was transported to Great Bend Regional Hospital. Shortly after his arrival he was pronounced dead. The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will review a plan to opt out of new Kansas law that allows conceal-carry weapons on campus.
