Barton Community College is hosting pre-auditions for the 2013 spring musical at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, in the Fine Arts building, room F-129.
A plan to add another student housing unit at Barton Community College will be discussed when the board holds its September study session, at 4 p.m. Thursday in F-30, the Seminar Room of the Fine Arts Building. Trustees will learn about a proposal to add a $4 million dormitory, funded by student housing revenue.

A Great Bend man was booked into the Barton County Jail on Sunday on an aggravated battery charge. Jesus G. Zendejas-Luna was reportedly involved in a domestic altercation with his ex-wife around 6 p.m. in the 2800 block of 20th St., and he allegedly took off in his pickup, dragging the victim. Bond was set at $75,000.

The theft of a Thompson submachine gun from a Great Bend residence has Crime Stoppers asking the public for information. Police Chief Dean Akings reports the gun, valued at $1,700, was stolen sometime between 4 p.m. on Aug. 27 and 5:11 p.m. on the 28th, from a home at 2821 16th St. "This .45 caliber automatic machine gun was a model T1SB with serial number KH2157," Akings said. The Great Bend Recreation Commission will hear a report on new software and the time line for future computer enhancements when the board meets at 4 p.m. Monday at the Carl Soden Recreation Center, 1214 Stone St. There will also be a report on enrollment in youth football, soccer and volleyball.

A head-on collision occurred at 9:10 p.m. Thursday in Rice County, 2.1 miles east of Lyons on U.S. 56. Kansas Highway Patrol reports Luis Gonzales, 55, died after the 1997 Dodge passenger car he was driving crossed the center line, colliding with a 1998 Ford pickup driven by Jimmy M. Bound, 65, Lyons. Bound was taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

An Otis woman was injured Tuesday evening on a Barton County road, 4 miles north and 3 miles west of Galatia.
An attempted fraud was reported to the Barton County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday. Someone called a Barton County resident saying her grandson was in trouble in New Mexico and needed help. The woman hung up before finding out what kind of "help" was wanted, and instead called her grandson, who said he was fine.
