Great Bend Library announces summer hours starting May 31
Great Bend Public Library will begin operating under summers at the end of the month. Effective May 31, the library will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays; 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays; and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. It will be closed on Sundays. Regular hours will resume Sept. 6.
RSVP to hold recycled Memorial Day flower sales
For the next two Saturdays, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program will be selling recycled Memorial Day flowers in the Zarah Mall. This fundraiser for RSVP will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 14 and 21, in the area behind the Miss Pretty Pickles store at 1218 Main. Senior Center announces May potluck
The Senior Center will serve Mexican food for its monthly potluck dinner, set for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Participants should bring a covered dish and their own table service. There is a fee for the Mexican food, and those planning to attend should call the Senior Center, 792-3906, and let them know.

Panther Bands Spring Concert recognize Seniors, Parents accomplishments
Panther Band members will present their Spring Concert at 7 p.m. on Monday in the GBHS Gym. The band seniors and their parents will be recognized, as well as all of the band student's achievements during the year.

Barton Community College has announced enrollment times for its summer 2011 outreach courses. The college's summer bulletin of classes lists all outreach courses and workshops. Country Plus band playing to relight the Eagle
The Fraternal Order of Eagles, 1024 Main, will have a dance from 7-11 p.m. Saturday, with the band Country Plus. This event is a fundraiser for the ongoing effort to restore and re-light the neon "eagle" signs outside the building. Admission is $3 per person or $5 per couple.
Area-wide choir to sing for National Day of Prayer
Surrendered Family Ministries is sponsoring a free program Thursday in observance of the National Day of Prayer. The public is invited to the event, which starts at 7 p.m. at the Crest Theater, 1905 Lakin Ave. An interdenominational, area-wide choir has been practicing and will lead the singing. The speaker will be Joseph Ametepe with Yesuli International Ministries. A sign-language interpreter will be available.

Thieves steal large mower
A riding lawn mower stolen from Lang Diesel Inc. in rural Ellinwood was too heavy for two people to push up onto a trailer, Great Bend Police Chief Dean Akings said. Akings, speaking for Crime Stoppers, said the mower was stolen from 15 SE 90 Ave. sometime between 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, and 8 a.m. on Friday.
No Parkinson’s Support Group meeting this month
The Parkinson's Support Group will not have a meeting this month. Sponsors of this new group have decided to meet every other month, so the next meeting will be June 25. The group plans to meet on the fourth Tuesday of even-numbered months (February, April, June, August, October and December).
Suspicious fire destroys trailer
PAWNEE ROCK - An abandoned mobile home in Pawnee Rock was destroyed by fire Monday, Sheriff Brian Bellendir said. The fire at 128 Rock St. was reported around 11:15 a.m. Great Bend Fire Department was called to assist the Pawnee Rock Fire Department, GBFD Chief Mike Napolitano said when they arrived the house was fully engulfed in flames. "The fire is suspicious in nature and the Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office was called," Bellendir said. ...
Library announces teen movie, free computer class
Great Bend Public Library will show "Annie" at the next Teen Movie Monday, 4 p.m. on May 20. The free movie is open to all students in grades 7-12. The library will have another free computer class at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21. The class will explain Goodreads, the largest world's largest website for readers and book recommendations. Rape reported in county
The Barton County Sheriff's Office is investigating a rape report. On Friday morning, a woman came to St. Rose Urgent Care and said she had been raped two days earlier. She said a man in a vehicle asked for directions then attacked her on a dirt road near the college (in the 100 block of SE 20 Ave. and NE 10 Road).
