Kiwanis’ Easter egg hunt scheduled for Saturday

The annual Easter egg hunt sponsored by the Great Bend Noon Kiwanis club is set for 9:30 a.m. sharp, Saturday at the Kiwanis Walking Track on the North side of Veterans Memorial Park, just off McKinley Street. The event is open to all area children, pre-school through 6th grade. Sponsors said there will be lots of Easter eggs and prizes will be given for special eggs.

Judge Mike Keeley to talk to Citizens Watchdog group about sentencing guidelines

The Citizens Watchdog Association will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at Rosewood Gallery, 16th and Main. Meetings are open to anyone who is concerned about the continuing burglaries in Great Bend. The speaker will be Barton County District Judge Mike Keeley, who will talk about sentencing guidelines in criminal cases.

BCC president to recommend Rolfs for athletic director

Barton Community College President Dr. Carl Heilman will recommend the hiring of Trevor Rolfs as the next athletic director, when the BCC Board of Trustees meets at 4 p.m. Thursday in the Seminar Room, located in F-30 of the Fine Arts Building. Heilman will review screening process as well. Other items on the agenda include hiring a customer service representative for the Fort Riley Campus, approval of the 2011-12 board meeting ...

Barton Community College will close for Easter break

Barton Community College will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday. Barton's Center for Adult Education and Shafer Gallery also will be closed. The college's regular class schedule and office hours will resume Tuesday, April 26.

Sixth grade band concert

The Great Bend district-wide sixth-grade band concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. on April 18, in the Great Bend High School gym. Elementary band members from Eisenhower, Jefferson, Lincoln, Park, Riley, Central Kansas Christian Academy and Holy Family School will participate in the program. The program will feature a variety of elementary band selections. Special pre-concert music will be provided by the Great Bend High School Jazz Band. The concert is free and open to the public.

Crime Stoppers seeks info on residential burglary

Crime Stoppers is seeking information about a burglary that occurred sometime between 2 and 8:15 p.m. on March 7 at 2316 12th St. in Great Bend. Police Chief Dean Akings reports that a 37-inch Viso flat-screen television, along with a PlayStation3 an X-Box 360 gaming system, were stolen from the unlocked residence. Loss was about $1,000.

Limited number of openings available for free 4-year-old At Risk Preschool Program

Helping Hands Preschool, along with Barton County Cooperative of Special Services and USD #428 - Great Bend, is looking for children to fill a limited number of openings still available in the 4-Year-old At-Risk Program for the 2011-2012 school year. This free program is sponsored by a grant from the Kansas State Board of Education. Helping Hands Preschool offers this program for children living in the Great Bend school district.

Activity Center offers program on spring flowers

The Great Bend Recreation Commission will host a free Stop 'N Learn session titled "Spring Flowers" from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday at the Great Bend Activity Center, 2715 18th St. Gerry Esfeld from Northview Nursery will talk about some of the new perennials and annuals available this year. She will also share tips on selecting the perfect flowers, fertilizing, mulching and care of flowers.

Zoo animals coming to Senior Center

Carlie Brown, education director at the Great Bend-Brit Spaugh Zoo, will bring some zoo animals to the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave., for a free program from 1-2 p.m. Friday. Brown will bring a Columbian red tail boa constrictor, kinkajou, hedgehog, great horned owl and maybe a few other animals, said Garet Fitzpatrick, program coordinator at the Great Bend Recreation Commission. She will also discuses what's new at the zoo. ...

Veterans Service Representative

A Veterans Service Representative from the Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs will be at the Great Bend Kansas Works Center, 1025 Main Street, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday to assist veterans and their families in applying for VA benefits. The Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs is a state agency that provides free assistance to veterans and their families with veterans' benefits. Call 785-625-8532 for more information.

Huelskamp announces Russell stop

As part of his "Continuing the Tradition" town hall tour, Congressman Tim Huelskamp announced he will host 12 more town hall meetings in April, including one in Russell County on April 21. Barton gets set for annual Sidewalk Art Contest

Barton Community College will host its fourth annual Sidewalk Art Contest April 19-21 on the sidewalk outside the College's Shafer Gallery. The contest is open to artists, high school age and above, from Great Bend, Claflin, Ellinwood and Hoisington, and any home-schooled high school students in the Barton area. GBMS band concert

The Great Bend Middle School Band Department will be having their spring band concerts on Thursday at the Great Bend Middle School gym. The 7th Grade Band the GBMS Jazz Ensemble concert will begin at 6:45 p.m. The 8th Grade Band and the GBMS Jazz Ensemble concert will begin at 8:15 p.m. The concerts are free and open to the public. The bands are directed by Kurtis Koch and assisted by Mark DeWald.
