Citizens Watchdog Association announces next meeting

Citizens Watchdog Association will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at Rosewood Gallery, 16th & Main. This neighborhood watch meeting is "open to the public, burglary victims, neighbors, friends and anyone who is concerned about the continuing burglaries in Great Bend." Randy Smith, criminal justice instructor from Barton County Community College, will give the program, "What in Your Neighborhood Needs to be Fixed."

Registration being taken for boating safety class

The Great Bend Recreation Commission and the Kansas Wildlife and Parks Department will host a Boating Safety Course on Saturday, April 2, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Great Bend Recreation Center, 1214 Stone St. Anyone born after Jan. 1, 1989, must successfully complete a boating safety course in order to operate a motorboat or sailboat. Two Great Bend arrested for driving on dike

Two men were arrested Friday for driving on the dike. Jesse McNett and Eli Woods, both of Great Bend, were booked into the Barton County Jail and released after posting $1,000 surety bonds.

Tuition on college agenda

The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will set tuition rates for Fiscal Year 2012 when it meets at 4 p.m. Thursday in the Room F-30, in the lower level of the Fine Arts Building. Other items on the agenda include a report on finances, college audit review and hiring personnel.

The USD 428 Board of Education will meet at 5 p.m. on Monday at the District Education Office, 201 South Patton Road. USD 403 Kindergarten Roundup

Presbyterian Women’s Rummage Sale to be held Saturday

Presbyterian Women of Great Bend will hold their annual Rummage Sale on Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon, in the church Fellowship Hall at 24th and Washington. Funds raised by the rummage sale are contributed by Presbyterian Women to local charities and service organizations in Barton County, as well as to national and worldwide missions. Sponsors said a wide variety of minimally priced useful items in good condition will be for sale.

Annual pancake feed next Thursday, March 10

The Great Bend Noon Kiwanis Club will sponsor its 53rd-annual Pancake Day from 4-7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 10, at the Expo One Building west of Great Bend on 10th Street. Crime Stoppers of Barton County and Great Bend is seeking information about the theft of equipment belonging to Classic Well service. Thieves steal large mower

A riding lawn mower stolen from Lang Diesel Inc. in rural Ellinwood was too heavy for two people to push up onto a trailer, Great Bend Police Chief Dean Akings said. Akings, speaking for Crime Stoppers, said the mower was stolen from 15 SE 90 Ave. sometime between 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, and 8 a.m. on Friday.

​No Parkinson’s Support Group meeting this month

The Parkinson's Support Group will not have a meeting this month. Sponsors of this new group have decided to meet every other month, so the next meeting will be June 25. The group plans to meet on the fourth Tuesday of even-numbered months (February, April, June, August, October and December).

​Suspicious fire destroys trailer

PAWNEE ROCK - An abandoned mobile home in Pawnee Rock was destroyed by fire Monday, Sheriff Brian Bellendir said. The fire at 128 Rock St. was reported around 11:15 a.m. Great Bend Fire Department was called to assist the Pawnee Rock Fire Department, GBFD Chief Mike Napolitano said when they arrived the house was fully engulfed in flames. Great Bend Public Library will show "Annie" at the next Teen Movie Monday, 4 p.m. on May 20. The free movie is open to all students in grades 7-12. The library will have another free computer class at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21. The class will explain Goodreads, the largest world's largest website for readers and book recommendations. Rape reported in county

The Barton County Sheriff's Office is investigating a rape report. On Friday morning, a woman came to St. Rose Urgent Care and said she had been raped two days earlier. She said a man in a vehicle asked for directions then attacked her on a dirt road near the college (in the 100 block of SE 20 Ave. and NE 10 Road).
