Benefit dinner for Robert Yarmer

Crime Stoppers seeks burglary tips
Crime Stoppers of Barton County and Great Bend is seeking information on a burglary that occurred sometime between 2:50 p.m. on Nov. 21 and 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 22 at Ensueno Hair Studio, 2100 10th St. in Great Bend. Boley to speak on ‘Kansas Quackers’
The public is invited to come learn about some of the early doctors in Kansas during a program at 1 p.m. Monday at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. Local history buff Joe Boley will present an informative program titled "Kansas Quackers," where he will talk especially about Dr. John Brinkly (1885-1942), the infamous "Goat Gland Docotor." This program is sponsored by the Great Bend Recreation Commission.

A Veterans Service Representative from the Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs will be at the Great Bend Kansasworks center, 1025 Main Street, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday to assist veterans and their families in applying for VA benefits. Two youths were taken to Russell Regional Hospital after two vehicles collided on Interstate 70 in Russell County. Barton County Progressives announce first meeting
The first meeting of a new group, the Barton County Progressives, will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Burnside Room of the Great Bend Recreation Center, 1214 Stone St. Organized by Christina Stein and Marty Keenan, this meeting's speaker will be the Rev. Seth Svaty, a pastor from Sterling and brother of Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Josh Svaty. Afterward there will be a 20-minute talk and discussion.

Burglars grab gold, electronics
Crime Stoppers of Barton County and Great Bend seeks information on a burglary at 1313 Cleveland St., Police Chief Dean Akings said. The residence was burglarized sometime between 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 24 and 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 28. The Friendship Meals Christmas dinner will be served at noon Thursday at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. The menu includes ham and sweet potatoes and the trimmings. Blood donors could win $1,000 gift card
WICHITA - Donors who present to give blood between May 23 and 31 in honor of Memorial Day could win one of five $1,000 American Express gift cards, the American Red Cross announced. In addition, their donations will honor those who gave their life for our country and support those in need of care. The Red Cross serves about 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country, including many Veterans Affairs medical centers.

The Panther Paw Restaurant staff and management at Great Bend High School have produced a cookbook containing recipes of dishes served throughout the school year.

Defensive driving class can lower premiums
The Great Bend Recreation Commission, Commission on Aging and Barton County Farm Bureau will host a defensive driving course next week at the Great Bend Activity Center, 2715 18th St. Classes run from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, May 20, and Tuesday, May 21.

History buff Joe Boley will give a program on greyhound racing at 1 p.m. Friday at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. Boley's free program explains how Great Bend is part of greyhound racing history.
Thieves steal large mower
A riding lawn mower stolen from Lang Diesel Inc. in rural Ellinwood was too heavy for two people to push up onto a trailer, Great Bend Police Chief Dean Akings said. Akings, speaking for Crime Stoppers, said the mower was stolen from 15 SE 90 Ave. sometime between 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, and 8 a.m. on Friday.
No Parkinson’s Support Group meeting this month
The Parkinson's Support Group will not have a meeting this month. Sponsors of this new group have decided to meet every other month, so the next meeting will be June 25. The group plans to meet on the fourth Tuesday of even-numbered months (February, April, June, August, October and December).
Suspicious fire destroys trailer
PAWNEE ROCK - An abandoned mobile home in Pawnee Rock was destroyed by fire Monday, Sheriff Brian Bellendir said. The fire at 128 Rock St. was reported around 11:15 a.m. Great Bend Fire Department was called to assist the Pawnee Rock Fire Department, GBFD Chief Mike Napolitano said when they arrived the house was fully engulfed in flames. Library announces teen movie, free computer class
Great Bend Public Library will show "Annie" at the next Teen Movie Monday, 4 p.m. on May 20. The free movie is open to all students in grades 7-12. The library will have another free computer class at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21. The class will explain Goodreads, the largest world's largest website for readers and book recommendations. Rape reported in county
The Barton County Sheriff's Office is investigating a rape report. On Friday morning, a woman came to St. Rose Urgent Care and said she had been raped two days earlier. She said a man in a vehicle asked for directions then attacked her on a dirt road near the college (in the 100 block of SE 20 Ave. and NE 10 Road).
