USD 403 Kindergarten Roundup
Otis-Bison USD 403 will have kindergarten screening on April 8. Any student who will attain the age of five on or before Aug. 31 may enroll in kindergarten for the 2011-2012 school year. If you have a child eligible for kindergarten, contact the district office at 785-387-2201 to schedule a screening time.

Free computer classes offered at Great Bend library
Presbyterian Women’s Rummage Sale to be held Saturday
Presbyterian Women of Great Bend will hold their annual Rummage Sale on Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon, in the church Fellowship Hall at 24th and Washington. Funds raised by the rummage sale are contributed by Presbyterian Women to local charities and service organizations in Barton County, as well as to national and worldwide missions. Sponsors said a wide variety of minimally priced useful items in good condition will be for sale.
Annual pancake feed next Thursday, March 10
The Great Bend Noon Kiwanis Club will sponsor its 53rd-annual Pancake Day from 4-7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 10, at the Expo One Building west of Great Bend on 10th Street. Pancakes, sausage and a beverage are $3. Tickets are available in advance from any Kiwanis club member or at the door. Crime Stoppers of Barton County and Great Bend is seeking information about the theft of equipment belonging to Classic Well service. Sometime between 6 p.m. on Feb. 18 and 7:30 a.m. on Feb. 21, elevators (used to hoist pipe) for a double drum pulling unit were stolen from a well site in the 5400 block of Second Street in Great Bend. Sunflower Polka Club: Wes Windholz Band to perform at free dance
The Sunflower Polka Club will have a free dance from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, March 6, at the Hoisington Knights of Columbus, located at Second and Main in Hoisington. The Wes Windholz Band will perform. There will be no BYOB or setups. The public is welcome to this event. The dance club enjoys a variety of music and dance styles, not just polka.
Friends of Library to meet in one week
The Great Bend Public Library Friends group will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 6, in the library's Kansas Room. Plans are being made for National Library Week in April and the annual book sale. Membership is $10 a year.

The Great Bend Recreation Commission's Lifeguard Training Class will be held March 20-25 at Barton Community College. This class is for any individual wanting to become a lifeguard. Learn to prevent falls
The Great Bend Recreation Commission will host "Fall Prevention" at 1 p.m. Friday at the Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. In this free program, Rick Schaffer from the South West Kansas Area Agency on Aging will discuss the five building blocks for preventing or reducing falls in the home and around town.
Program offered on pool, pond care
"Pond Care 101" will be presented 5:30-7 p.m. on Thursday, June 20, at the Great Bend Recreation Center, 1214 Stone St. This free presentation by Shawna Beran includes tips on maintaining a pool or backyard pond. Garret Fitzpatrick, program director for the Great Bend Recreation Commission, said Beran will cover topics such as water care, plants, fish and diseases. There will also be time for questions.

A Great Bend home was burglarized twice during the month of May, Police Chief Dean Akings said. The house at 1604 Monroe St. was first burglarized between 9 and 9:30 p.m. on May 9. Man dies after motorcycle hits deer
A 38-year-old Ellinwood man died Monday night after the motorcycle he was driving hit at deer on U.S. 56. Daniel J. Otipoby was transported to Great Bend Regional Hospital. Shortly after his arrival he was pronounced dead. BCC trustees say no to guns on campus
The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will review a plan to opt out of new Kansas law that allows conceal-carry weapons on campus. The board will meet at 4 p.m. Thursday in the Seminar Room, F-30 of the Fine Arts Building, for its monthly study session. The board will vote at its next business meeting on whether to adopt the resolution to opt out of the new law for four years.

Recreation Commission board looks at budget time line
