Great Bend American Legion to close for Christmas
The American Legion in Great Bend will be closed Friday and Saturday.
Benefit Soup Supper
A Great Bend Community Benefit Soup Supper for Shawn and Karen Crane and sons Jacob and Brandon will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday at the First Southern Baptist Church, 3301 19th. Free will donations will be taken to benefit the family who lost their home to a fire.
Special Santa Tickets
Special Santa tickets are for sale at Landmark National Bank to benefit Blayze Bahe who was injured in a motorcycle accident on Nov 20, 2009. His left foot was amputated as a result of the accident. The Santa was created by Rochelle Van Scyoc, a friend of the family. Tickets are $1 for one or $5 for six. The drawing will be held on Dec. 20.
Barton Community College announces holiday closings
Barton Community College offices will be closed for the holiday break Dec. 20-31. All offices at the college will reopen at 7:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 3. Spring semester classes will begin Jan. 10. BCC trustees to hire new RSVP director
The board of trustees at Barton Community College is expected to hire a new head men's soccer coach and a new director of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program when it meets at 4 p.m. Thursday in the Seminar Room, F-30 of the Fine Arts Building. Other items on the agenda include early childhood education certificate programs and an admissions and recruitment presentation by Todd Moore, director of admissions and marketing.

Detective Denton Doze from the Great Bend Police Department will talk about scams during a free program at 1 p.m. Friday at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. Doze will share information about scams that have been cropping up lately by e-mail, telephone and mail.

High winds disturb traffic
High winds created problems for motorists Saturday morning, the Barton County Sheriff's Office reports. At 10:26 a.m., a motorist reported as she was going over an overpass on K-156 at East K-4, a vehicle lost a cargo trailer, which was in the ditch. Kansas Highway Patrol responded. Crime Stoppers of Barton County and Great Bend is seeking information on a burglary that occurred sometime between 2:50 p.m. on Nov. 21 and 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 22 at Ensueno Hair Studio, 2100 10th St. in Great Bend. Boley to speak on ‘Kansas Quackers’
The public is invited to come learn about some of the early doctors in Kansas during a program at 1 p.m. Monday at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. Local history buff Joe Boley will present an informative program titled "Kansas Quackers," where he will talk especially about Dr. John Brinkly (1885-1942), the infamous "Goat Gland Docotor." This program is sponsored by the Great Bend Recreation Commission.

No Parkinson’s Support Group meeting this month
The Parkinson's Support Group will not have a meeting this month. Sponsors of this new group have decided to meet every other month, so the next meeting will be June 25. The group plans to meet on the fourth Tuesday of even-numbered months (February, April, June, August, October and December).
Suspicious fire destroys trailer
PAWNEE ROCK - An abandoned mobile home in Pawnee Rock was destroyed by fire Monday, Sheriff Brian Bellendir said. The fire at 128 Rock St. was reported around 11:15 a.m. Great Bend Fire Department was called to assist the Pawnee Rock Fire Department, GBFD Chief Mike Napolitano said when they arrived the house was fully engulfed in flames. Library announces teen movie, free computer class
Great Bend Public Library will show "Annie" at the next Teen Movie Monday, 4 p.m. on May 20. The free movie is open to all students in grades 7-12. The library will have another free computer class at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21. The class will explain Goodreads, the largest world's largest website for readers and book recommendations. Rape reported in county
The Barton County Sheriff's Office is investigating a rape report. On Friday morning, a woman came to St. Rose Urgent Care and said she had been raped two days earlier. She said a man in a vehicle asked for directions then attacked her on a dirt road near the college (in the 100 block of SE 20 Ave. and NE 10 Road).

A benefit dinner and dance for Laura Brown, who was diagnosed with cancer, will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Elks Lodge, 1120 Kansas. Man battered at convenience store made multiple calls to police
A Great Bend man was allegedly battered by four other people, Saturday night or early Sunday at the Kwik Shop at 24th and Main.
