Crime Stoppers seeks help solving burglary
Sometime on Jan. 3 or 4, a shed behind the Highland Hotel at 3017 10th St. in Great Bend was burglarized. Stolen were a roto-rooter, sink cable cleaner and a bundle of cables. Loss was $3,800. Police Chief Dean Akings asks anyone with information about this crime or any other crime in Barton County to call Crime Stoppers, 792-1300 or 888-305-1300.
Barton Community College to hire cheerleading coach
The Board of Trustees of Barton Community College is scheduled to approve hiring of new personnel, including Stephanie Joiner, a candidate for head cheerleading coach, when it meets at 4 p.m. Thursday in room F-30, on the lower level of the Fine Arts Building. Other items on the agenda include approval of new policy statements on service regions and on strategic planning.
Ferguson wins Sunflower charity poker tourney
Daryl Ferguson of Great Bend went home with the first-place prize of $750 at Sunday's Sunflower Diversified Services poker tournament. Arlene Manning of Ellinwood took second for $300, and Dwight Nett of Kingman won $150 for third place. Barton Community College will offer a Certified Medication Aide Update to provide CMAs with continuing education and a review of medications and delivery styles. The Barton County Spelling Bee, originally scheduled for the morning of Feb. 12 at the Great Bend High School Auditorium, has been rescheduled to Feb. 5. Sponsors said the date was changed because there was a conflict with the use of the auditorium.
Seniors announce ice cream social

Man reports being knocked out
The Great Bend Police Department is investigating a local man's report that he was hit in the head and knocked unconscious Tuesday in the area of 10th and Kansas. Lt. Registration for Story Time starts Monday
Registration for the next weekly Story Time sessions at the Great Bend Public Library starts Monday, Children's Librarian Eric Coulbourne said. Parents are invited to bring children to the library, 1409 Williams St., for story time from 10:15 to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays, beginning Jan. 18. They will hear stories, do a craft, sing songs and have fun at this free program.

Defensive driving class can lower premiums
The Great Bend Recreation Commission, Commission on Aging and Barton County Farm Bureau will host a defensive driving course next week at the Great Bend Activity Center, 2715 18th St. Classes run from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, May 20, and Tuesday, May 21.

Thieves steal large mower
A riding lawn mower stolen from Lang Diesel Inc. in rural Ellinwood was too heavy for two people to push up onto a trailer, Great Bend Police Chief Dean Akings said. Akings, speaking for Crime Stoppers, said the mower was stolen from 15 SE 90 Ave. sometime between 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, and 8 a.m. on Friday.
No Parkinson’s Support Group meeting this month
The Parkinson's Support Group will not have a meeting this month. Sponsors of this new group have decided to meet every other month, so the next meeting will be June 25. The group plans to meet on the fourth Tuesday of even-numbered months (February, April, June, August, October and December).
Suspicious fire destroys trailer
PAWNEE ROCK - An abandoned mobile home in Pawnee Rock was destroyed by fire Monday, Sheriff Brian Bellendir said. The fire at 128 Rock St. was reported around 11:15 a.m. Great Bend Fire Department was called to assist the Pawnee Rock Fire Department, GBFD Chief Mike Napolitano said when they arrived the house was fully engulfed in flames. "The fire is suspicious in nature and the Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office was called," Bellendir said. ...
Library announces teen movie, free computer class
Great Bend Public Library will show "Annie" at the next Teen Movie Monday, 4 p.m. on May 20. The free movie is open to all students in grades 7-12. The library will have another free computer class at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21. The class will explain Goodreads, the largest world's largest website for readers and book recommendations. Rape reported in county
The Barton County Sheriff's Office is investigating a rape report. On Friday morning, a woman came to St. Rose Urgent Care and said she had been raped two days earlier. She said a man in a vehicle asked for directions then attacked her on a dirt road near the college (in the 100 block of SE 20 Ave. and NE 10 Road).
