Free computer classes at Great Bend Public Library

Starting next week, the Great Bend Public Library, 1409 Williams St., will offer free courses on using the computer spreadsheet program Microsoft Excel 2010. One-hour classes are available twice on Tuesdays, at 3 and 7 p.m., on the following dates:

Crime Stoppers seeks clues on stolen Ford Taurus

A stolen car was recovered this week, but Crime Stoppers would still like anyone with information to help officers solve the case, Great Bend Police Chief Dean Akings said.

Winter Middle School Dance scheduled for Friday night

The Great Bend Recreation Commission and the 20th Judicial District Juvenile Services will sponsor a Winter Middle School Dance from 7-9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, at the Great Bend Activity Center, 2715 18th St. Admission is $3 per student at the door. Students need to show GBMS ID when entering. Snacks will be provided.

Chamber Coffee

This week's Chamber of Commerce Coffee will be hosted by Service Rite Medical, Inc., 215 South Highway 281, across from Venture Corportation, at 9:30 a.m., Thursday. Ambassador in charge will be Eric Gotsche with greeters Shawn Panzer and AJ Chrest. Coffee, doughnuts and door prizes will be available.

Tail Feather Contest ends Friday

This Friday is the last day for pheasant hunters to submit entries in the Great Bend Recreation Commission's annual Longest Tail Feather Contest, Program Coordinator Garet Fitzpatrick said. The winner will receive a $30 Chamber Gift certificate donated by Goss Insurance Agency.

Library showing free movies

Great Bend Public Library, 1409 Williams St., will be showing free movies served with free popcorn this month, starting with an after-school movie at 3:30 p.m. this Friday. Open to all ages, the after-school movie is an animated blockbuster featuring race car Lightning McQueen and friends competing in the first-ever World Grand Prix.

GBHS Hall of Fame tickets go on sale

Tickets will go on sale Wednesday for the 2011 Great Bend High School Hall of Fame luncheon honoring Don Halbower, former GBHS principal, and Dan McGovern, a 1960 GBHS graduate who held a variety of high level positions in the administrations of President Reagan and the first President Bush, as well as the California state government.

Crime Stoppers: Storage sheds burglarized

Seven storage sheds at 3118 Washington St. were broken into sometime between noon on Friday, Jan. 20, and 4:40 p.m. on Jan. 22, Great Bend Police Chief Dean Akings said. Bolt cutters were used to cut off the locks.

Library giving away old magazines

Great Bend Public Library is cleaning out its collection of old magazines again, marketing director Jennifer King said. Starting this week, several older issues of various magazines are available for the public to take.

Suicide Prevention Task Force will meet

The Central Kansas Partnership has formed a Suicide Prevention Task Force that will have its organizational meeting at 11 a.m. on Monday, at Barton County Health Department WIC Conference Room. The group will meet to discuss suicide prevention goals and possible strategies to increase awareness of signs of suicide and what community members can do. Anyone who is interested is invited to attend.

USD 428 Board of Education meeting

USD 428 Board of Education will meet at noon on Tuesday at Riley Elementary School, 1515 10th Street. Items on the agenda include using district vans for the 2012 Driver Education instruction, and approval of teacher retirements. Riley Principal JoAnn Blevins and other staff members will share information regarding the academic programs and the school improvement efforts at Riley Elementary School.
