BCC trustees to discuss degree changes

Starting in the fall of 2012, students in the Registered Nursing program at Barton Community College may need one more three-hour course to graduate. These and other items are on the agenda for the BCC Board of Trustees' October study session, set for 4 p.m. Thursday in the Seminar Room, F-30 of the Fine Arts Auditorium.

GBHS Band and Orchestra Chili Supper

The Great Bend High School Band and Orchestra will hold a Chili Supper from 5 to 7 p.m. on Homecoming, Oct. 7, at the GBHS Jack Kilby Commons. Carry-out will be available. Cost is $6 per ticket. To place orders for cinnamon rolls call 793-1521, ext. 189 or 785-650-2194. Cost for a dozen cinnamon rolls is $9 and $5 for six.

Boys Scouts will collect items for food bank

Members of the Quivira Council Boy Scouts of America will conduct a Scouting for Food collection on Saturday, Oct. 8. Residents in Great Bend, Hoisington and Ellinwood are asked to place non-perishable food items on their porches by 8 a.m. that day. All items collected will be donated to the Barton County Food Bank.

A Barton County motorist was injured Sunday when he swerved to avoid a deer, 0.4 miles north of SE 50 Road on SE 100 Ave. The accident occurred around 4 a.m.

Driver injured after semi-trailer carrying hay bales rolls in Russell County

Larry Robert Bates, 60, from Rogers, Texas, was injured when his semi-trailer went off a Russell County road at 11:10 a.m. Friday. Kansas Highway Patrol reports the right wheels dropped off the edge of U.S. 281 about 0.6 miles south of Paradise Road, and when the driver attempted to correct, the weight of hay bales caused the semi to be pulled down into the ditch where it rolled one and a quarter times. Rogers was taken to Russell Regional Hospital with undetermined injuries.
