Starting in the fall of 2012, students in the Registered Nursing program at Barton Community College may need one more three-hour course to graduate. Members of the Quivira Council Boy Scouts of America will conduct a Scouting for Food collection on Saturday, Oct. 8. Residents in Great Bend, Hoisington and Ellinwood are asked to place non-perishable food items on their porches by 8 a.m. that day. All items collected will be donated to the Barton County Food Bank.
Crime Stoppers of Barton County and Great Bend is seeking information about the theft and destruction of a gray Chevy pickup from Great Bend.

A Barton County motorist was injured Sunday when he swerved to avoid a deer, 0.4 miles north of SE 50 Road on SE 100 Ave. The accident occurred around 4 a.m.
The Barton County Sheriff's Office is investigating vandalism to a Methodist cemetery located northeast of Hoisington on NE 10 Ave. and NE 120 Road.
Larry Robert Bates, 60, from Rogers, Texas, was injured when his semi-trailer went off a Russell County road at 11:10 a.m. Friday. Kansas Highway Patrol reports the right wheels dropped off the edge of U.S. 281 about 0.6 miles south of Paradise Road, and when the driver attempted to correct, the weight of hay bales caused the semi to be pulled down into the ditch where it rolled one and a quarter times. Rogers was taken to Russell Regional Hospital with undetermined injuries.
The annual Zoo Society meeting will be held from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Great Bend-Brit Spaugh Zoo. President Penny Quinn will host a slide show presentation to update members on activities and answer questions.

An Otis woman was injured Tuesday evening on a Barton County road, 4 miles north and 3 miles west of Galatia.
An attempted fraud was reported to the Barton County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday. Someone called a Barton County resident saying her grandson was in trouble in New Mexico and needed help. The woman hung up before finding out what kind of "help" was wanted, and instead called her grandson, who said he was fine.
