Zoo Society offers early view of cougar at annual meeting

The annual Zoo Society meeting will be held from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Great Bend-Brit Spaugh Zoo. President Penny Quinn will host a slide show presentation to update members on activities and answer questions.

Library system executive committee meets Monday

The Central Kansas Library System Executive Committee will meet at 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 26, at CKLS Headquarters, located in the basement of the Great Bend Public Library, 1409 Williams St. An executive session for a personnel item, followed by possible action, is on the agenda.

Venders wanted for craft fair

The American Legion Auxiliary will hold a craft fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8 at the American Legion, 1011 Kansas Ave., in Great Bend. A $25 donation is suggested for having a booth. Proceeds will go toward helping veterans at the Fort Dodge Soldiers Home. For more information call Brenda at 620-793-2796 or the post, 793-5912. This event will be open to the public.

Reiter wins Sunflower poker tourney

Linh Reiter of Great Bend won the first-place jackpot of $750 at the recent Sunflower Diversified Services poker tournament. Robert Unger of Hudson won $300 for second place and Bill Sutton of Dodge City $150 for third.

Free movies showing at the public library

Movie nights are back at the Great Bend Public Library, 1409 Williams St. Starting Friday, Sept. 30 the library will once again be screening movies for the public, said Jennifer King, head of marketing.

BOCK Poker Run

The Big Bend Bike Rally Poker Run, sponsored by Bikers of Central Kansas, will be held on Sunday. The run will begin at 10 a.m. with the last bike in at 4 p.m. Cost is $10 per hand or $25 for three hands. After drawing the first card, poker run participants will leave the Great Bend Expo Complex and enjoy a scenic ride around beautiful Lake Wilson heading to the K-18 Cafe. From the K-18 Cafe, riders will travel west on Highway 18 to Highway 281, where they will head south to the Fossil Fueling Station in Russell ...

Crime prevention & safety is program topic

Detective Rick Popp from the Barton County Sheriff's Office will talk about crime prevention and safety at 1 p.m. Friday at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. The Great Bend Recreation Commission will host this free program.

BCC sets auditions for 2012 community musical, ‘L’il Abner’

Barton Community College's Performing Arts Departments have announced auditions for the college's spring musical, "L'il Abner," based on the book by Norman Panama and Melvin Frank and the characters created by Al Capp.

CKAVI to hold Craft/Food Sale
