This week was a hard one. I lost one more pound since last week's column (up to 22 of the 40 I set out to lose). With my pregnancy finally out of the closet, I can admit that my saving grace in sticking to the rules this week has been nausea. You would think that a persistent aversion to food would help boost the weight loss. However, eating less doesn't always mean losing more.

After my first month of Paleo, I decided to add back some dairy products. Now, before anyone gets too excited, that means hard cheese, butter and cream. It also still means that when mixed with non-Paleo ingredients, they are still on the banned list, so, no ice cream. Of course, after this cold snap, who is really in the mood for that? But, I wonder if I can figure out a way to make Paleo powdered sugar ... I could go really go for a maple-walnut truffle.

Another week down, and two more pounds lost. Thanksgiving presented a slight challenge when it came to sticking with the rules. As a refresher, my self-written rules are simply no seconds, no dessert, no soda, and no snacking. We have officially entered into the holiday season. You know, that time of year where every other day someone brings in a big tray of cookies or candy. Or they bring in that dessert they want to make a trial run at before the big party. Not only that, but you find yourself shopping during meal time and need a little pick me up to tide you over until you can eat a healthy dinner at home.

Actions speak louder than words. Oh, how true that is. With Thanksgiving tomorrow, so many of us will have a "cheat day" and opt for the second helping of stuffing or an extra dollop of whipped cream on our pumpkin pie.
Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) recently released Kansas Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System- Local Data, 2011, which highlights health risk behavior statistics for local geographic areas compiled through data from the 2011 Kansas Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey. More than 20,000 adult Kansans participated in the 2011 survey, comprising a sample large enough to provide reliable information for 43 of the state's 105 counties and for the 16 Public Health Preparedness Regions.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) encourages people to quit smoking as part of the American Cancer Society Great American Smokeout® on Thursday, Nov. 21. Warmer weather means more running for me, and while I love a good solo run, my thoughts quickly become boring and obnoxious, even to myself. A better option? Podcasts. A great podcast keeps the mind engaged and distracted while the feet are busy and the legs are burning. It’s like having a conversation without having to do any work.
