Volunteers in Action

Dear Editor; The spirit of generosity is definitely alive in Barton County. As the new volunteer coordinator for Volunteers In Action, I have seen firsthand the example our community sets for caring about their neighbors. The Check Out Hunger Food bank drive held the first weekend of April showed our young volunteers from Holy Family, Girls Scouts and the Barton County Youth Care how much Barton County residents want to take care of each other. ...

Crony capitalism

Dear Editor: As a taxpayer it was a disappointment to read in the April 26 Tribune that the low bid for the juco dorm construction was passed over by the Trustees in order to award same to a local contractor for an extra $132,187.00! The administration, to their credit, demonstrated good judgememt, recommending accepance of the low bid. Crony capitalism is a term that comes to mind. Henry Burmeister

State Hospital prohibits amendment right

Dear Editor: Protest against forced mandatory overtime by employees of Larned State Hospital was prohibited by the secretary of the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services (KDADS), Shawn Sullivan. According to hospital sources, an email was sent out notifying LSH employees that the protest, planned for Saturday at the Pawnee County Courthouse, was considered "an action against the state" and anyone who attended would be subject to termination. "The staffs are scared and tired ...

Tangible artifacts separate Facts from Fiction

Dear Editor, Relatively few people know that parts of Kansas were once part of the original "Republic of Texas". Just a few days ago (Apr 23) I attended a rare exhibit of historical artifacts which were authentic items from that period of Time. I am a history buff and I belong to both of the two major Masonic Rites myself: the York Rite and the Scottish Rite---but that exhibit was exceptional. Professional Historians were there ...

Ban high capacity magazines

Dear Editor, Yet another reason why we should ban high-capacity magazines is found in the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The answer to whether or not a ban on high-capacity magazines will work is found in United States Statutes at Large 1236, enacted by the 73rd Congress. Investigators found 10 spent or partially spent 30-round capacity magazines at Sandy Hook and 154 spent .223 casings. They estimated these rounds were fired in less ...

Preserve the Salina branch of KU School of Medicine

Dear Editor, Many of you may be aware of the recent budget cuts the Kansas Senate and House have proposed placing upon the higher education in the state of Kansas. With the projected budget cuts, the administration of the University of Kansas has proposed closing our campus in Salina. This would be a huge loss to the state as a whole. KU School of Medicine-Salina is committed to producing quality physicians who will return to ...

Time to move on

Dear Editor, It is time to move on. An election is what it is and elections do at times get heated and controversial. That is the nature of the beast. But the election is over, what was said was said and it is time to move forward for the good of everyone involved. They can call me a liar, I can call them liars and we can continue to have heated exchanges to what end? ...

Speaking out doesn’t make one negative

Dear Editor, I would like to respond to the recent "ramblings" of a city council member in the Great Bend Tribune on April 3, 2013. One sentence caught my eye early on that stated, "with my short experience on the council." You've got that right! The city council member that you "rant and raved" about has been elected by the people of the fourth ward. So I don't think it's up to you to say ...

Fair Tax Plan clarified

Dear Editor, The FairTax Plan is a comprehensive proposal that replaces all federal income and payroll based taxes with an integrated approach including a progressive national retail sales tax, a prebate to ensure no American pays federal taxes on spending up to the poverty level, dollar-for-dollar federal revenue replacement, and, through companion legislation, the repeal of the 16th Amendment. This nonpartisan legislation (HR 25/S122) abolishes all federal personal and corporate income taxes, gift, estate, capital ...

Christians need to stop faithless

Dear Editor, I am writing in regard to the piece on the Opinion Page, "Save Our Schools From Creationism." by Tina Dupuy. First of all, I was surprised you would run such an opinion that would insult the very solid beliefs of alot of people in this area. Ms. Dupuy states "...Creationism harms schools." If you take an honest look at the state of public schools in our nation today - I think many would ...

Votes count in local election

Dear Editor, I would like to thank all of the people who supported me during the last election; I really appreciated the support from you. I was a bit disappointed in the low voter turnout and I wish I knew why that was the case. Your votes do count in local elections and if you don't vote we lose. The newspaper said that they would not print a letter to the editor from me because ...
