Dear Editor, Thank you to all who volunteered at the Great Bend Public Library book sale. The time and energy you gave for the sale will ultimately support the library. Volunteers from CPI transported several tons of boxes onto tables for the sale and then came and moved them out, Friends of the Library members sorted books all year long and worked during the sale. Sunflower Diversified, Great Bend Public Library's teen group, library staff, ...
Dear Editor, This past Monday, the Barton County Association of Churches held their annual chicken noodle soup supper at the 1st Assembly of God Church on Patton Road. This year Joyce Haberman chaired the event. Joyce, her husband John, Leroy Hensley, and Craig Haneke worked diligently from 9 a.m. until clean up after 8 p.m. However, 27 volunteers joined them throughout the day; as well as preparation work that was done prior to the event. ...
Dear Editor, After 21-plus years of the signing of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) the Lyons City Hall and Library now have an accessible rest room. Because of the expense to remodel the present rest rooms it was decided to go a cheaper route. At $100-plus a month rent, the city has an accessible (almost) porta potty (outside toilet). This four-foot by four-foot, blue outside toilet, sits at the south entrance to the library. ...
Dear Editor, I attended Gov. Sam Brownback's agriculture summit, held at St. Dominic's Catholic Church Parish Hall in Garden City. For me, it was the first time for me to meet and shake hands with Gov. Brownback. In the past, he and I have debated, for lack of a better word, in the press, each of us partially differing on some issues. At the ag summit, I wanted to put the past in the past ...
Dear Editor, On Sept. 16, my family, the Moomaws, suffered a tragic loss. Ten days earlier, our mother/wife/grandmother was walking across the street in Garden City to attend a meeting. This active, healthy woman suffered a traumatic brain injury, due to a motorist backing over her. Since then I have had friends who have asked, "What can we do for you?" At the time I had no answer, now I do. I would like for ...
Dear Editor, The Bikers of Central Kansas would like to take this opportunity to thank every individual and business who participated in or donated to the Owen's Road Warrior Benefit for Owen Klug of Odin held on Aug. 13. With the generous support of the community, surrounding counties and those riding from near and far, we were able to donate $4,100 to Owen's family to help defer costs of his medical expenses. We appreciate everyone ...
Dear Editor, We are writing in response to the article in the insert "Fighting for a cure" in the Oct. 2 Tribune. The title of the article is: "Are mammograms the best option for detection?" In the article evidence is cited from several studies dating from 1992 to 2004 and a statement from the American College of Physicians from 2007. Studies were carried out in Canada and Denmark, where women are not offered screening mammography ...
Dear Editor, I am really struggling with all the hoopla surrounding the death of Steve Jobs. Jobs was a great man in this world. His accomplishments changed our world greatly, but that does not give him a right standing with God or a place in heaven for all eternity. Steve Jobs was no different than any other human being in the sight of God. He was either a believer in Jesus Christ or he wasn't. ...
Dear Editor, Saturday, Cub Scouts and Boys Scouts from Quivira Council will fan out into Great Bend, Hoisington and Ellinwood neighborhoods in hopes of collecting 100,000 pounds of food for deserving area families. Scouting for Food is the Boy Scouts' annual effort to help tackle the problem of hunger in America. Residents are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items such as packaged meats, baby formula and canned or boxed foods. Contributors are asked to place ...
Dear Editor, The Public Forum respondent in the Oct. 4 Tribune - "Kilby statue is an affront to heritage" - doesn't deserve much acknowledgement; but, to paraphrase the historian, prairie poet, Carl Sandburg, "he is full of beans and prunes." The Jack Kilby memorial statue will make our courthouse square one of the great name-places in the state of Kansas. Homer Kruckenberg, Great Bend
Dear Editor, To Mr. Bones: I was very disappointed with your Oct. 4 letter to the Tribune. Your cost report for the Kilby Memorial (and its three-figure bronze sculpture that has yet to be placed in the plaza) is a gross exaggeration. You also fail to mention that the total cost for the Memorial is paid by private donations, and not one tax dollar has been, or will be, spent. Several weeks ago I was ...
Dear Editor, We learn about Abraham Lincoln almost from the minute we start school. Me too. I remember there were two pictures on the wall at my grammar school, which used to stand where part of the Library in Great Bend is now. One was Lincoln and the other was a print of George Washington that, I guess, the artist never finished, because the bottom part was all white. I've come to think that it ...
Dear Editor, If the Democrats want to avoid an election slaughter in 2012 maybe they should move for the immediate repeal of Obamacare. The majority of our population wants it repealed and resent the manner in which it was passed over their loud objections. Democrats need to stop acting as though that big stink doesn't exist. Maybe they should also avoid Obama and his cronies like the plague. Byron Maduska, Leavenworth
Dear Editor, Now that I have gone this far on my B-29 Memorial information, I want to thank everyone who have helped is doing so. Linda McCaffrey, Beverly Komarek and her staff at the Barton County Museum have provided hospitality and support. I plan to leave this notebook at the Barton County Museum for your inspection and viewing. I want to thank Jim Misunas, Great Bend Tribune reporter, for his support by an article and ...
Dear Editor, To the citizens of Great Bend: While traveling through your fine city the other day I noticed a monstrosity in front of your courthouse. I inquired about it and found out it was a monument dedicated to Jack Kilby, inventor of the computer chip. I was told the cost was over a million dollars. What a travesty. At a time when money is so scarce and people are finding it hard to survive, ...
Dear Editor,
Dear Editor,
Dear Editor,
Yes I walked out of the council meeting. I should not have even sat there to begin with as I had told them I would not play their childish game and then I did. This was a planned rehearsed orchestrated attempt to discredit me with the voters. I wonder how many if not all of the council members discussed this with each other prior to the meeting.
