Allison has made a difference

Dear Editor, Since Dr. Mike Allison has been mayor of Great Bend the last 12 years, much has happened we can be proud of: • A 4.2 percent growth in population, when most rural communities saw a decline in population • A decrease in the mill levy from 45.09 to 42.33, which is a drop of over 6 percent, while most other taxes have gone up • Unemployment in Great Bend is currently 5.5 percvent ...

Increase hours at the zoo

Dear Editor, On this beautiful Sunday afternoon my husband and I went to the zoo at 4:32. I was very upset to find that it was closed. The employee inside stated, "Our hours are until 4:30. We are city ran and they will not pay us after those hours. Everyone must be out by 5:00." As a tax paying citizen of Barton County I feel that our city zoo should have longer hours. The sun ...

Bridge are a stone, cold gas

Dear Editor, I read the article in The Great Bend Tribune "The Bridges of Barton County." I have always enjoyed seeing old, native or natural limestone houses, barns, and even bridges in Barton County. My great-grandfather, Rudolf Riedl, was said to have built a house of limestone after a tornado completely demolished his old wooden house. Plus, my mother's first cousin, the late Ben Bahr of Olmitz, lived in a similar limestone house which was ...

Vote for Allison is vote for the future

Dear Editor, To the Great Bend voters: I am Jim Thurman, former mayor of Great Bend. I know what it takes to serve as the mayor of Great Bend. Many people though I did a commendable job. I want you to reelect Mike Allison as our mayor of the future. Why? Because he is smart, intelligent, hard working, experienced and well acquainted with the job. I have talked with many city personnel and they are ...

Tribune — actually print what I said

Dear Editor, I would really appreciate it if the Tribune could actually print what I said instead of what they want you to see just one time. At the League of Women Voters forum the mayor said that the local economy is great and that he got Red Barn located here and my response was that I was totally for Red Barn until I saw the clause in the city and county contract with Red ...

Sunflower Spelling Bee a success

Dear Editor, Just a brief note to thank you for your support of the Sunflower Spelling Bee. My family and I very much enjoyed our day in Great Bend and at Barton Community College. The event was well-organized and exciting. Just a note on return on investment, since that it always an issue when hosting an event: yes, we spent money in Great Bend, and we'll have good things to say about the community. Dick ...

Restore the cuts

Dear Editor, When our son, Brandon, was 2 years old, he was diagnosed with moderate to severe autism. We made the decision when he was 6 years old that I would put my college career on hold for me to stay at home with him because of the many issues he faced and needed help with. When Brandon was 10 years old, we were having issues with Brandon running away every chance he got. He ...

Lots of volunteers help Meals on Wheels

Dear Editor, I would like to provide some clarification to the article regarding the change of vendors for Meals on Wheels. CKMC had been the only vendor for Meals on Wheels in Great Bend, but meals in Hoisington are provided by Clara Barton Hospital and Ellinwood meals are provided by Friendship Meals from the Great Bend Senior Center. The many volunteers who give up their lunch hour in all three communities are the backbone of ...

Allison has served city well as mayor

Dear Editor, Thank you Mayor Allison for having lunch with us at the Senior Center, March 10. We appreciate you bringing meals to those who could not go through the serving line. Also, visiting with attendees at all the tables. On a personal note, I think Mike Allison has served Great Bend in a professional and honorable manner as our mayor. Let's not take our privilege to vote for granted. It only takes a few ...

Great Bend was great to this visitor

Dear Editor, I was in town for work and tried to get on the Internet with my lap top and ran into a problem with the wireless connection. After contacting my company IT people, I needed a cable connection so they could restore my computer. The hotel was wireless. So I called the Great Bend Library and spoke with Cara Negaard. She helped me to get set up with an ethernet line so I could ...

Study determines college value

Dear Editor, American economist and scholar Milton Friedman accurately stated, "One of the great mistakes is to judge policies and programs by their intentions rather than their results." Those are important distinctions when attempting to measure the true value of Barton Community College to its students, stake holders and our community as a whole. Forty-six years ago, the college was founded on good intentions with the grass roots effort and desire of our community to ...

Who has authority over your life?

Dear Editor, Have you ever thought much about authority? We are all under some form of authority. Who have you allowed to have authority over your life? When you stand to declare your thoughts and opinions, what is the authority from which you established your foundation? In the world we live in people justify their opinions and thoughts by that which they know. Where did you acquire your knowledge to base your opinion? Many of ...

City business should be fair to all

Dear Editor, This is the last letter I will write on the bidding subject. Bill, I am glad we have vehicle dealers and Venture here also and while I may have not had the figures available to me, the fact is that when the city hand delivers bid packages to Venture and not to anyone else it makes me very suspicious. I think Venture does good work and they employ a lot of local residents ...

Thanks for supporting CASA

Dear Editor, The board of directors, volunteers, auction committee, and staff of Central Kansas CASA, Inc., would like to extend a heart-felt thank you to the residents of the 20th Judicial District (Barton, Ellsworth, Rice, Russell, and Stafford counties) for their support of our 6th annual CASA Chocolate Auction, which was held Feb. 5 at the Highland Convention Center. This year's auction was our most successful yet! With the help of businesses and individuals who ...

College board should follow its own policy

Dear Editor, I disagree with the conclusions about Barton Community Colleges policy governance that Paul Unruh expressed in his recent letter to the editor. You don't have to look far in Kansas to find community colleges that suffered long-lasting damage from trustees who brought their personal agendas to the board and inflicted them on the college. Policy governance was not used in those instances but is designed to prevent them. When a volunteer board uses ...

Myers explains actions at meeting

Yes I walked out of the council meeting. I should not have even sat there to begin with as I had told them I would not play their childish game and then I did. This was a planned rehearsed orchestrated attempt to discredit me with the voters. I wonder how many if not all of the council members discussed this with each other prior to the meeting.
