Dear Editor, I read the article in the Great Bend Tribune describing the nine-month, $6 million dollar project to improve water-flow from the Arkansas River to the Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area. I found it interesting that the old open-canal design was first constructed in the 1950's. Yet, it was obvious that the old design was becoming insufficient. As the article noted, many people, sadly, threw trash into the canal and water-flow would be impeded and ...
Dear Editor, Great Bend was permanently founded May 23, 1872, and in the opinion of many, ever since has led a "charmed life." I think often about the incredible good fortune of our city every time something important is about to happen to us. For example, we have survived droughts, the Dustbowl, grasshopper invasions, flooding, tornadoes, a polio epidemic, some of the mayhem of the Civil War, WWI and WWII, the Great Depression, flood control, ...
Dear Editor, I am writing this because I believe that it is my and your right to vote. I don't care if it is at the Federal, State or City level, it is our right. This brings me to the subject of for some reason same of the City Council has decided that we do not need to vote on several things they have decided on their own to do. All has resulted in tax ...
Dear Editor, I am asking that everyone get out to vote for Randy Myers for Mayor, Thom Boor for 3rd Ward Councilman and Edwin Roberts for 1st Ward Councilman. The way it works, at City Council, all council members vote on all the issues at the council meetings, the reason I tell you this is because I didn't know until I went to a council meeting (just thought there may be some others out there ...
Dear Editor, As you consider your vote for Mayor on April 2nd please join me in re-electing Mayor Mike Allison for another term. Due to Mayor Allison's leadership the City of Great Bend has seen considerable progress, for instance: the increase in population over the last 10 years, city streets and zoo have been improved, and we are striving for American Zoological Accreditation, a new water park, youth programs at the middle and high school, ...
Dear Editor, I would like to show my support for Randy Myers for Mayor. Randy is a fighter. He might keep getting knocked down but he keeps getting right back up because he stands up for the tax paying citizens of this city. It never ceases to amaze me as to what this city council and Mayor can spend our tax dollars on. Randy is usually the only one opposed to the reckless spending. And ...
Dear Editor, As I write this letter, I think about what sort of Mayor does the City of Great Bend, the citizens of Great Bend, and the businesses deserve. And as a new City Council member I have had the privilege of interacting and working with both individuals seeking the office in a short amount of time. The longer I am on the Council the more I am disturbed by the actions, comments, and thought ...
Dear Editor, As you cast your vote for Mayor on April 2nd, please consider what the position requires and how important it is to the community to select the right person. As the Mayor, he does not vote on the Council unless there is a tie vote. Therefore, his art of persuasion and ability to build consensus are very important aspects to the position. But more importantly, the Mayor serves as the figure head for ...
Dear Editor, Last Thursday I was sitting in the waiting room at Countryside Veterinarian Hospital when a police officer or maybe a detective came in carrying his dog in his arms. The dog was in great distress and gasping for air and taken immediately to the doctor as an emergency. The family soon joined their dog in the back. A couple hours later, I was the last one left in the office and I saw ...
Dear Editor, If you feel like you are in a never ending loop. If you can't find a job in Great Bend that pays enough to get you out of the hole. If you want things to change and be able to have a say in what goes on in Great Bend, such as if your taxes should or should not go up. Do you want a mayor and councilmembers to listen to you even ...
Dear Editor, Randy Myers fights. The proof is in the pudding. He fought for the city workers to keep their BC and BS insurance. He fought for the residents on the commercial daycare that should not be in a residential area (too much traffic, etc.). He fought for a traffic light at Broadway and Harrison. Even though he didn't win, he fought. These are just a few, there are more. If you have a problem ...
Dear Editor, Please make sure you get out and vote on Tuesday April 2nd, 2013. Third ward make a showing and cast your vote for Allene Owen. I have known Allene for many years. She is a dedicated and compassionate person about her community. She listens and takes action when her community calls on her. Her commitment to the city council has been unending. She will represent our city in a positive way for growth ...
Dear Editor, I am writing to endorse Mike Allison for the position of Mayor of Great Bend. During Mike's term as mayor, Great Bend has seen positive growth which is easily measured financially, by the 27% increase in the ½ cent sales tax from its first full year compared to that of 2012. More importantly, under Mike's tenure, we have seen positive growth in an area that is difficult to measure, but is inherently linked ...
Dear Editor, We have known Mike Allison for more than forty years and can vouch for his integrity and knowledge of city issues. He has been involved in many Great Bend civic clubs and programs, from being a Cub Scout leader to an excellent city mayor. Mike researches all issues coming before the council and knows the pros and cons, which affect city residents. Having the well read knowledge of these issues he isn't quick ...
Dear Editor, Instead of occupying Wall Street, why don't we occupy Congress. But let's do it a little differently. Start a movement to replace every member of congress. I say we vote out of office, every incumbent. Start with the county offices, the State Representatives and the state Senators. Don't make it complicated, just pick on all incumbents. Then move on to the Congressmen and Congresswomen of Washington. If we vote out of office every ...
Dear Editor,
Dear Editor,
Yes I walked out of the council meeting. I should not have even sat there to begin with as I had told them I would not play their childish game and then I did. This was a planned rehearsed orchestrated attempt to discredit me with the voters. I wonder how many if not all of the council members discussed this with each other prior to the meeting.
Dear Editor,
