A 'fair' time for all

This is annual tradition provides a venue for youth and adults from across the county to show off their talents and be get a little pat on the back for their efforts. It is also a time for the community to come together for a week of family entertainment. But, above all of this, it is a chance to remember what makes us the well-grounded folks we are, built on a strong work ethic and a healthy foundation of common sense.

Protecting Our Independence

There will be much fanfare with fireworks, parades, picnics, and other patriotic events celebrating our country's independence from Great Britain in 1776. But when the festivities have ended, only a few will have reflected upon the true meaning of independence and the role it has played in shaping our nation's character.

Thanks, dad

Father's Day was founded in 1910 in Spokane, Wash., by Sonora Smart Dodd. Its first celebration was in the Spokane YMCA on June 19, 1910. Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised his six children there. After hearing a sermon about Jarvis' Mother's Day in 1909, she told her pastor that fathers should have a similar holiday honoring them. Despite support from President Woodrow Wilson, there was resistance from Congress which feared it would become to commercialized. So, it did not have much success initially.
