Stop mor protesters

You can't find it around here, but there is a national food chain, Chik-fil-a, that has a hilarious ad campaign in which cows hold up crude signs that read: "Eat more chikin!"

They don't follow the rules

Here's a hint: You're in a security area at a major airport. There are signs all over the place about how to take seriously the need for security rules. So, how about following the rules until you get outside? That shouldn't seem like such a challenge, but apparently it was this week when, according to the Associated Press, "a sheriff's deputy shocked an airline passenger with a stun gun three times after the man refused ...

Lt. Dan honors real hero

Gary Sinise is one of those celebrities you don't hear about all that much when he's off the screen. He's not cozying up to South American despots who have clearly stated their goal is to destroy the United States of America. He's not encouraging "protesters" who claim to care about working class Americans while they cost millions in extra civic costs. He's not using up afternoon TV time, pushing his most recent agenda down ...

Some guests never leave

Coquies have become established in Hawaii. That was the news that hit the international wire recently from the Associated Press. Most of us have no idea what coquies are, but in parts of Hawaii they are turning paradise into a noisy mess, and they are an example of how much people can mess up when they aren't careful with wildlife. "Coqui population density in Hawaii can reach 20,000 animals per acre and affects 50,000 acres. ...

Lights, camera, service

Carroll Baker, Walter Brennan, Lee J. Cobb ... That's just the beginning of the list. It goes on from there. These are just some of the stars of the 1962 blockbuster epic, "How the West was Won." It was a tremendous hit when it came out, shot in the three-strip Cinerama process, which required a special theater to be shown in its full wide, wide, wide screen glory. Andy Devine, Henry Fonda, Carolyn Jones ...

Final word isn't on the Internet

When you don't believe in anything, you will fall for everything. Proof to the point came this week in Sweden where the government has officially recognized a "religion" that is based on ripping off Internet files. According to the Associated Press: "A file-sharing group that considers itself a spiritual organization said Thursday that Sweden has recognized it as a religious community. "The Church of Kopimism received approval in late December. The public authority responsible for ...

Bee careful with this threat

Things are not looking any better in the continuing threat to our way of life that begins with some of the smaller American workers.

Make your own choice

The suggestion is clear. You don't have enough on the ball to make your own choices. Not for what you wear, what you eat and drink and certainly not in regards to who charts the course of your nation. The American celebrity industry has been beating that into the collective American noggin for years now, but it's never been more obvious than in the last few election cycles, when the Hollywood and boob tube elite ...

Times are changing, so are we

We've just passed the phase of the year when people pick up "A Christmas Carol," if they bother to read the book at all.

Rule number one ...

OK, let's get this straight. Today's "protesters" aren't stopping a war. They aren't changing the world. And the whole world is NOT watching. What they are doing is disrupting business for hard working, small business owners and they are violating the law. When they do, they need to get arrested, and that is what happened this week in Iowa, not because they were striking out in the name of the little guy - but because ...

Garage salin' into trouble

It's winter, so you wouldn't expect there to be much garage sale traffic these days.

Fight or run

We deserve. We want. We organize. We take. Americans can believe it or not. It's up to us. But if we ignore the lessons that have been exhibited all across the nation, and were repeated most recently the day after Christmas, then we can just continue to foot the bill in both financial losses and personal injury, even death. We've seen the images, such as those from last spring break, when the large group of ...

Scammers will scam

As we head towards a new year, as the holidays slip by, as we face another dreary winter ahead, it's not a bad time to suggest that we get what we pay for.

Merry Christmas

We have recession and depression. We face elections and politics, side vs. side. We experience new challenges and threats, senseless controversies, public scandals. We endure health lectures, self-improvement harping, guilt trips wrapped around product endorsements. We suffer through poorly-conceived entertainment. We seek after something that will give our lives meaning and we hope against worldly hope that there will be a holiday miracle that brings that meaning into our existence. And so, now we pause ...

Ironic freedom

On Thursday, Gov. Sam Brownback signed a bill that establishes "Celebrate Freedom Week" during the week of Sept. 17 and requires schools to teach students about the Constitution, Bill of Rights and Declaration of Independence in grades K-8 each year during that week. (Sept. 17, 1787, is the date the U.S. Constitution was adopted in Philadelphia.)

Copper recycling

Copper recycling can be a good thing coming out of old air conditioning or plumbing during replacement. Copper is a non-renewable resource, and apparently recycled copper is worth nearly as much as new copper.

Cool/Not Cool

The Imagination Playground is coming to Great Bend and will make its public debut during June Jaunt. The portable playground is a set of oversized blocks, lightweight but sturdy enough to build with. They were designed by award-winning architect David Rockwell, who was inspired by watching his own children play.

Time to grow up

Challenges. All of us have them. And, it is easy to sit around and point fingers and blame others for our failures. It is easy to throw out exaggerated or incorrect information and hope people will listen and take up our cause because of the passion behind our words. It is easy to become caught up in distracting and destructive banter. It is easy to become a fool.
