Etta "Jane" Akings, 84, died June 28 at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. She was born Aug. 9, 1926 at Barnsdall, Okla., the daughter of John Oliver and Julia Ava Anthony. Jane married Landon Fletcher Akings July 29, 1944. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Akings was a resident of Great Bend since 2003, coming from Olathe. She and Landon owned the Oxford Place Steak House in Olathe for 30 years. She was also a cook for the Galatia school district from 1955 to 1964.

On July 18, 1939 she married Frank J. Reif in Ellinwood. He died on Aug. 17, 1989. A longtime resident of Claflin, coming from Ellinwood, she was employed by Ell-Kan in Ellsworth and Fuller Brush in Great Bend.

A resident of Great Bend since 2004, coming from Twin Falls, Idaho, she worked in aircraft manufacturing, the Tupperware Factory, and was a farm wife.

On Oct. 13, 1950 he married Violet Wittman in Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend since 1947, coming from Cherryvale, he was a truck driver and delivery man for Santa Fe Trail Transportation.

HOISINGTON - Martin "Marty" C. Smith, 58, passed away Sunday May 19, at KU Medical Center in Kansas City. Born October 7, 1954 in Denver, Colo., he was the son of Robert E. and Evelyn (Collins) Smith. On Jan. 16, 1998 he married Karen King in Springfield, Mo. Marty moved to Hoisington in 2008 coming from Lovington, New Mexico. He served his country in the United States Army and worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator until he was disabled.

On Dec. 15, 1946, she married Walter Mac Fox in Wichita. A longtime area resident of Larned, she was a farmer's wife, a Rosie Riveter for Boeing during World War II and worked in the Dietary Department at Larned State Hospital.
