Colleen Nell Riegel, 82, died Oct. 7 at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. Born Nov. 29, 1929 in Dodge City, she was the daughter of George W. and Mae L. (Dooley) Fowler. In 1947 she graduated from Dodge City High School and in 1951 from Emporia State Teachers College. She received her Masters degree from Kansas State University in 1979. OTIS - Raymond E. Pierce, 78, died Oct. 3 at St. Johns Health Center in Hays. Born Feb. 15, 1934 in Thomas County, he was the son of Orvel and Glenna (Stokes) Pierce. A former resident of the Morland area, he was a driller in the oilfield.
RUSSELL - Julian H. Gonzales, 46, of Russell, died Oct. 6 north of Great Bend. Born July 2, 1966 in Tulia, Texas, he was the son of Larry and Mary Karlin (Garcia) Gonzales. At the age of 2, Julian and his family moved to Goodland, where he grew up and attended schools. On June 16, 1993 he married Vicky Werth in Victoria. ST. JOHN - Maurine E. Frink, 87, died Oct. 6 in St. John. Born April 18, 1925 in Greensburg, she was the daughter of William O. and Mabel E. (Kennedy) Dorland. On Nov. 26, 1944, she married Robert H. Frink, Jr. in Greensburg. He survives. She was a 1943 graduate of Greensburg High School. A resident of St. John since 1954, she worked in the Stafford County Clerk's office and 20 years as office manager for Farm Bureau Insurance of St. John.
Wanda Smith, 79, died Oct. 7 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born May 22, 1933, she was the daughter of Lucius Lee and Gladys Fern Greene Cobb. On July 1, 1950 she married William R. Smith in Kansas City, Mo. He died on Oct. 21, 1999. A resident of Great Bend since 1999, coming from Kansas City, Mo., she was employed by Manor Bakery as a department manager, for Clarke Printing Company, and was a homemaker.
Charlotte Davis, 86, died Oct. 7 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Born April 13, 1926 in Coffeyville, she was the daughter of Levi Bethel and Tina Mabel (Rose) Haines. On May 20, 1950 she married Samuel G. Davis in Corpus Christi, Texas. He died on Sept. 14, 1976. A resident of Great Bend since 1968, she was a clerk for the Barton County Treasurers and Appraisers Offices.
LAURIE, Mo. - Joanne Barr passed away Sept. 30. Born March 15, 1933, at Wichita, she was the daughter of Gene and Ruth Ann Connor. She attended Wichita North High School and went on to nursing school to obtain her degree as a Registered Nurse.
James "Bradley" Kilgore, 35, died Oct. 1 at Hardtner. Born Sept. 17, 1977, at Hutchinson, he was the son of William F. and Brenda L. (Davis) Kilgore. A lifetime Great Bend resident, he was a hand for Clark Well Service, Medicine Lodge.
Margaret J. Krug Shomber, 90, died Oct. 3 at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. She was born March 26, 1922, at Causey, N.M., the daughter of Thomas M. and Cora Mae (Clouse) Morrison. She married Gerald H. Krug on Nov. 3, 1950, at Cunningham. He died Dec. 25, 1978. She married Delbert L. Shomber on Feb. 25, 1989, at Great Bend. He died April 24, 1992. A Great Bend resident since 1945, coming from Wichita, she was a sales clerk for Sears and Lischesky's.
LARNED - Wilhelm (Bill) H. Schwartzkopf, 101, died on Oct. 1. Born Oct. 19, 1910, he was son of Philip and Mary Georg Schwartzkopf. He was born north of Alexander and lived there until he was 8 years old. He attended school in Alexander and went to Fort Hays College where he obtained his degree in business education and agriculture. His teaching career included, Johnson and Bushton, but he spent most of his time in Larned, teaching typing, business, and organizing the distributive education program involving the Larned merchants. ODIN - Gerald W. "Jerry" Beran, 88, died May 21, 2015, at Almost Home, Great Bend. He was born Sept. 9, 1926, on the farm in Odin, the son of Anton A. and Hattie Rose (Prosser) Beran. He graduated from Odin High School in 1944 and later enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. After returning from the military, Jerry played professional baseball for the Hutchinson Elks.
Delores Rae Keegan, 83, died May 23, 2015, at Sterling House of Great Bend. She was born Aug. 23, 1931, at Little River, the daughter of Ray and Elsie (Eaton) Folck. Mrs. Keegan was a Great Bend resident and taught public school for 39 years, the last 30 years in Great Bend at Morrison and Jefferson Elementary Schools.
Louis Wintholz, 83, passed from this world to join his beloved wife Phyllis, in heaven on May 22, 2015, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. He was born Jan. 30, 1932, in Collyer, the son of Reinholdt "Ray" and Mary (Windholz) Wintholz. He attended school in Collyer and graduated from the Hays Cadets Academy in 1950. He married Phyllis Montgomery on May 8, 1954, at Hearndon. She passed away on Feb. 15, 2008.
Sister Marie Klein, 102, died May 21, 2015, in the Dominican Sisters' Convent Infirmary, Great Bend. Born April 25, 1913, in Fowler, as Mary Ann Agatha Klein, Sister Marie was the daughter of Anthony and Mary Helen (Hoffman) Klein. She entered the Dominican Sisters' Community July 14, 1928, and pronounced her first vows August 17, 1931. She celebrated 80 years of religious profession in 2011.
GREENFIELD, Ind. - Marlin "Gene" Tammen, 79, passed away May 22, 2015, at Hancock Regional Hospital. Born on Dec.27, 1935, in Kansas City, Mo., he was the son of Herman Tammen and Gladys Tammen. In 1953, he graduated from Great Bend High School. He received his Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree from Wichita State University. In October of 1956, he married Cheryl Loy (Foos). He held various positions in the Federal Government from 1962-1987, including Midwest Director of the Office of Personnel Management. LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Grace Imogene (Hathaway) Abel, 90, died May 12, 2015, at St. Rose Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was born March 19, 1925, northwest of St. John, the daughter of John William and Reno (Kanzleiter) Hathaway.
LARNED - Walter (Mac) Fox, 92, passed away May 20, 2015, at Diversicare of Larned. Born Sept. 12, 1922, in Larned, he was the son of Walter M. and Gladys Strader Fox. On Dec. 15, 1946, he married Dorothy D. Goldsmith in Wichita. She passed away on May 16, 2013. A lifetime area resident, he was a farmer, worked at Larned State Hospital as the plumbing shop foreman for 32 years and also worked at Boeing for one year before going in the service.
RUSSELL - Fara Mae (Brack) Popp, 81, passed away May 17, at the Hays Medical Center. Born on July 13, 1933, on the family farm north of Otis, she was the daughter of Edwin and Phoebe (Keil) Brack. She grew up on the farm and graduated from Otis High School. On June 15, 1958, she married Paul Popp in Otis. She was a homemaker and assisted her parents on the farm when needed.
WINFIELD - Susan Marie (Feldman) Quint, 46, of Winfield, went to her Heavenly home on May 15, after a valiant fight with Brain Cancer. She was born March 19, 1969, in Great Bend to Richard and Jackye (Strother) Feldman. Susan graduated from Great Bend High School and attended Barton County Community College. She obtained an Office Manager degree from Wichita Area Vocational Technical College and an Associate Degree from Cowley County Community College in Early Childhood Education. Julia Ann Barnes, 54, died May 16, at her home in Great Bend. Born July 4, 1960, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of James R. Jr., and Joyce L. (Mohr) Lofland. On Nov. 14, 1981, she married Jeff Barnes in Great Bend. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, she was employed in retirement plan management at CPI Qualified Plan Consultants for more than 15 years. She had a great love of quilting.
