HOISINGTON - Alvina Katherine Haas, 88, died Jan. 26 at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. Born Nov. 21, 1923 in Hoisington, she was the daughter of Jacob and Salamena (Radke) Boger. On July 26, 1945 she married Rufus Haas in Hoisington. A lifetime resident of Hoisington, she was a homemaker and worked along side of her husband on the dairy farm. She also was employed by the Galatia School District 66 as a cook for 18 years, by the Bierock Shop in Hoisington, and as a seamstress for Stricker Farms in Milberger. Bernard L. "Hus" Huslig, 83, died Jan. 26 at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita. Born Feb. 29, 1928 in Claflin, he was the son of Leo and Mary (Boor) Huslig. On July 23, 1949 he married Donna Joan "Jo" Rose in Great Bend. She died on Oct. 22, 2006. A resident of Great Bend for most of his life, he was a lifetime oilfield worker.

BUSHTON - Larry L. Novotny Jr., 50, died Jan. 25 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Oct. 20, 1961 in Lincoln, he was the son of Larry L. and C. Joan Zachgo Novotny Sr. He was a resident of Pathways Rest Care in Great Bend.
George W. Bemis, 77, died Jan. 26 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Jan. 25, 1935 in Great Bend, he was the son of Carney and Ula (Falgren) Bemis. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Kansas State University, he worked for the Corps of Engineers in Kansas City. On Oct. 31, 1959 he married Jane Olsen in Sparta, Wis. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was owner and operator of Bemis Construction, Inc.
NEWTON - Vincent Wayne Ochs, 78, died at home in the arms of his family. Born on Nov. 4, 1933 in Timken, he was the son of Phillip Ochs and Verna Morgan Scheurman. On June 1, 1954 he married Gloria Schope in Albert. He was the former owner and operator of Ochs Cleaners in Newton from 1974-1997.
BELPRE -Florence M. "Sis" Gales, 88, died Jan. 25, 2012. She was born Sept. 29, 1923 at Hugoton, the daughter of Ernest Dorr and Fannie Mae (Johnson) Frazee. She was a life-long resident of Belpre, a homemaker, Edwards Co. Healthy Start Visitor, St. Joseph Hospital worker, and an Avon representative. Her memberships include St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Altar Society, KEENAGERS, and the Cancer Support Group.
GREAT BEND - Funeral service for Jack Callaway will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Little River United Methodist Church, with pastor Theresa Forshee officiating. Burial will follow at the Bean Cemetery in Little River. LARNED - Elsie R. Rankin, 94, died Jan. 24, 2012 at the Larned Health Care. Born July 29, 1917, in Johnstown, Penn., she was the daughter of Robert and Dorotha Cramer Cummins. She was an accounting bookkeeper. On July 20, 1935, she married Charles W. Rankin in Wheeling, W.V. He died on Nov. 11, 1997.

On Feb. 4, 1956 she married Marvin H. Rajewski in Schoenchen. A Great Bend resident since 1959, coming from Hays, she was a clerk at Dollar Tree and had been a cashier in the Barton Community College Cafeteria. She was also owner of Arrow Supply.
GREAT BEND - Jack Callaway was born Lonnie Alvin Cowden, Jr., on Oct. 19, 1923, to Lonnie Alvin Cowden and Effie Ellen Dines Cowden in Kansas City. He died Jan. 22 at Sterling Presbyterian Manor in Sterling. At the age of five, Jack was adopted by Walter Q. and Fannie Callaway and was given the name Jack. Mary E. Wilhelm, 90, died Jan. 20 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Dec. 29, 1921 in rural Lewis, she was the daughter of Ralph and Grace (Atkins) Corzine. She graduated from Garfield High School and attended Fort Hays State University. On Sept. 26, 1946 she married Velmer A. Wilhelm in Garfield. He died on June 24, 1987. LARNED - George Dennis Martin, 63, passed away Jan. 21 at the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital in Larned. Born April 15, 1948 in Great Bend, he was the son of George Earl and Maxine Salmans Martin. A lifetime area resident, except for 17 years when he was a warehouse manager for Houghton Mifflin Publishing Company in Batavia, Ill. He also assisted with the formation of Riverside Publishing Co. Chicago, Ill., and was the managing editor for the Tiller and Toiler Newspaper.

HUTCHINSON - Susan Marie Harms, 56, died Dec. 18 at her home in Hutchinson. Born Feb. 14, 1958, in McPherson, she was the daughter of Gustaf and Naomi Scheikofsky Nelson. She was a graduate of McPherson High School. On July 8, 1988, she married Robert Harms. He survives. She was a resident of Hutchinson the last 23 years.
Mabel E. Hiss, 91, died Dec. 18 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born April 9, 1923, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of August H. and Anna (Gagelman) Werhahn. On Oct. 29, 1944, she married her high school sweetheart, John R. Hiss. He died on Aug. 4, 2005. A lifetime Great Bend resident, she was a homemaker and also worked at the Great Bend Tribune during World War II. She attended Washburn University.
Darlene M. Creacy, 80, lifelong Great Bend resident, passed away on Tuesday evening, Dec. 16, at Leisure Homestead Care Center at St. John. Born on July 9, 1934, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Ira and Inez (Davis) Thomason. She attended school in Great Bend. She worked as a cook in several area restaurants, including at the Jayhawk Cafe, the Highland Hotel, and Holiday Inn, and was cook and former owner of the Zarah Cafe in Great Bend for many years. PRATT - Jon Travis Hartman, 74, died Dec. 13 at his home in Pratt. Born Oct. 1, 1940, in Pratt, he was the son of Charles Dwight and Helen Louise (Stiles) Hartman. He earned his Master of Science degree in Art from Fort Hays University and taught 35 years at Great Bend High School. He served on the Vernon Filley Art Museum Foundation Board of Directors for several years and remained as Emeritus Board Member.

Helen E. (Nickerson) Sharp, 81, died Dec. 13, at Diversicare of Larned. Born May 14, 1933, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Corbin and Elizabeth (Skirvin) Nickerson. On June 1, 1942, she married Bobby Dale Howard in Pratt. They were later divorced. She then married Robert Carl Sharp on June 21, 1975, in Great Bend. They were later divorced. A longtime resident of Great Bend, also residing in Las Vegas, Nev. and Larned, she served as a librarian and bus driver for the Radium School District and was a bookkeeper for Melvin Nuss. She enjoyed reading and sewing.

Kenneth Michael Klepper, 84, died Dec. 11 at his home in Great Bend. He was born May 26, 1930, at Raymond, the son of Nicholas and Alice (Strobl) Klepper. He married Marilyn Russell Sept. 22, 1952, at Great Bend. She died Dec. 31, 2009.
Cleo Eugene Watkins, 83, died on Dec. 6, 2014 at Via Christi Hospital-St. Francis in Wichita. Born on Jan. 21, 1931, in Stockton, he was the son of Roy Bryon and Grace Mae (Hulst) Watkins. A resident of Great Bend for most of his life he worked as a Lineman for Midwest Energy until he retired. Everyone that knew him, knew how much he has always loved his motorcycles, both working on them and riding. He was also an avid bowler most of his adult life, a loving father and grandfather and will be missed by many.
Luther Morgenstern, 98, died Dec. 6 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Aug. 23, 1916, on the farm in Russell County, the son of Sam G. and Lena (Radke) Morgenstern. On Aug. 23, 1949, he married Helen Margheim in Hoisington. She died Feb. 11, 2008. Luther was a farmer and a contract pumper in the oil fields, retiring in 1980.
Verl Lee Martin, 84, died December 8 at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. He was born August 5, 1930, at Utica, the son of Clade and Sylvia (Everhart) Martin. A Great Bend resident since 1971, he worked for Missouri-Pacific Truck Lines and Turner Farms as a truck driver.
Daniel Nobles, 88, died Dec. 7 at Life Care Center, Wichita. Born Feb. 21, 1926, at Stuttgart, Ark., he was the son of Cagie, Sr. and Georgia B. (Stewart) Nobles. He married Alice Mary Cushinberry on Dec. 18, 1947, at Hoisington. She died March 6, 2014. A lifetime Great Bend resident, he was facilities manager for the Great Bend Post Office.
