STARK - Bob Defenbaugh, 84, of rural Stark passed away June 7 at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute. Born on Dec. 5, 1926 in Stark, he was the son of George Robert Defenbaugh and Pearle (Kelso) Defenbaugh. He graduated from Grant Township in 1944. On Jan. 2, 1945, he married Ula Wright in Stark. She survives. Bob was a lifelong farmer.
RUSSELL - Loretta Margaret Ross, 89, of Russell, died June 7 at the Main Street Manor of Russell. Born Dec. 2, 1921, in Dubuque, she was the daughter of J. Henry and Philomena (Eckart) Casey. She graduated from Bunker Hill High School. On June 15, 1943, she married Leo J. Ross in Dubuque. He died on July 6, 1993. She was employed by Russell Regional Hospital for 19 years in medical records. She retired from the hospital in 1984.
HOISINGTON - Matilda J. (Tillie) Schremmer died June 8 at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. Born July 5, 1918, in rural Odin, she was the daughter of Fred and Anna (Kirmer) Zorn. On May 23, 1939, she married Walter R. Schremmer at Holy Family Church in Odin. He died March 19, 1980. A longtime resident of Hoisington, coming from the Beaver and Odin area, she was a homemaker.
Jean Ann Weathers, 84, of Great Bend, died June 2 at St. John's Hospice in Lakewood, Colo. Born April 17, 1927, in Carthage, Mo., she was the daughter of Joseph and Mabel Bruce.
HOISINGTON - Marjorie Ann (Cochrane) Barrett, 88, died on June 1, at Via Christi St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Wichita. Born on Nov. 2, 1922, in Ellsworth, she was the daughter of Joseph Lichen Cochrane and Lillian Alice (Lawson) Cochrane. Marjorie grew up in Hoisington, graduating from Hoisington High School in 1940. She graduated from Chillicothe Business School in Chillicothe, Mo., in 1942 with an Associate Degree in Business. On Nov. 22, 1941, she married James Edward Barrett in Kansas City, Mo. Ron A. Radke, 66, died June 7 at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. He was born March 28, 1945, at Great Bend, the son of LaVerne F. and Beatrice C. (Hull) Radke. He married Jeanie Becker Sept. 11, 1965, at McPherson. A lifetime Great Bend resident, he was owner and operator of Discount Trading.
LARNED - Kolita Ann Hullett, 66, died June 5 at the Leisure Homestead, St. John. She was born Sept. 27, 1944, in Larned, the daughter of William F. and Viola M. Marlett Kirchgassner. She was a juvenile correctional officer for the Larned Juvenile Correctional Facility. She was a lifetime area resident of Larned.
ALMOGORDO, N.M. - Evelyn Margaret Folkerts Mazurkiewicz, 87, passed away June 2, in Alamogordo, N.M. Born March 27, 1924 in Larned, she was the daughter of Harm and Mabel (Simmons) Folkerts. Evelyn Mazurkiewicz began her schooling in a one room school, West Point, close to the family farm. She graduated from Larned High School in 1942. In 1945 she graduated from Wesley Nursing School. BISON - Edward O. "Peck" Edwards Jr., 86, died June 3 at Hospice and Home Care of Reno County Hospice House in Hutchinson. Born Aug. 18, 1924 in Bison, he was the son of Everett O. Edwards Sr. and Frances M. (Bitter) Edwards. He graduated from Bison High School in 1942. A lifelong resident of Rush County, he was a farmer before his retirement. On Aug. 4, 1948 he married Eunice C. Ficken. She preceded him in death on Oct. 23, 1966. On June 6, 1971 he married Margaret L. (Folsom) Deckert at the United Methodist Church in Bison.
Laurence E. "Larry" Bryant, 86, died June 6 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Sept. 29, 1924 at Wellsford the son of Ricord "T. R." and Pearl (Lee) Bryant and the brother of Bill Bryant and Kay Mauch, all of whom preceded him in death.
Deloris M. Steuri-McDowell, 82, died June 3, at home in Great Bend. She was born April 27, 1929, at Redwing, the daughter of Edward E. and Mary (Feltes) Klusener. She married Robert "Bob" McDowell July 18, 1951, at Great Bend. They later divorced and she married Orren Steuri Jan. 4, 1967, at Great Bend. He died August 15, 1977. She then re-married Robert McDowell. He died July 7, 2005.
ELLINWOOD - Warren "Swanee" Oliver Johnson, 90, died June 4 at Country Place Senior Living in Ellinwood. Born May 27, 1921 in Ellinwood, he was the son of Edward John Johnson and Della Unruh. He graduated from the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo. A longtime resident of Ellinwood, formerly of Oklahoma and Texas, he was an independent petroleum geologist. On Sept. 13, 1948 he married Helen Dowdy in Phoenix, Ariz. She died on Sept. 12, 2009.

Mary Lea Wade, 85, died Oct. 21, at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. Born Aug. 14, 1929, in Prague, Okla., she was the daughter of Alvin and Pearl (Stiffler) Montgomery. On Oct. 14, 1951, she married Lee Wade in Great Bend. He died on April 9, 1988. A resident of Great Bend since 1946, coming from Prague, Okla., she was a secretary for Kopke Law Office and Haneke Financial Services.
RUSSELL - Gerald Dean Bender, 72, passed away on Oct. 19, at Russell Regional Hospital. Born Jan. 23, 1942, in Russell, he was the son of Herbert H. and Viola E. (Mai) Bender. He grew up and attended schools in the Milberger area. He was employed by the City of Russell in the refuse department for 20 years, retiring in 1999.
CLINTON, Iowa - Gerald V. Galusha, 91, of Clinton, Iowa, died Sunday Oct. 19, at his home. Gerald was born on Aug. 16, 1923, in Garden Plaines, Ill., the son of James and Louise (Gerhardt) Galusha. He graduated from Erie High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945, with the 90th Infantry Division under General Patton. He was wounded on Jan. 16, 1945, at the Battle of the Bulge, when he received severe head injuries from mortar shell shrapnel.
Jack Daubert, 61, died Oct. 19 at Hutchinson Regional Hospital. Born in Great Bend, on April 9, 1953, he was the son of Herman and Wanda (Riemann) Daubert. He graduated from Great Bend High School in 1972. Jack worked as a Certified Medical Assistant at "The Cedars" retirement community in McPherson. He was a longtime resident of Great Bend.
Kathy L. Kaiser, 65, passed away Oct. 19, at her home. Born Aug. 10, 1949, in Hopeton, Okla., she was the daughter of Glenn S. and Artie R. (Elliott) Jones. A resident of Great Bend since 1977, she worked 23 years for USD #428 in Food Service. On July 30, 1977, she married Paul Kaiser in Great Bend. He survives of the home.
James C. Burnette, 77, died Oct. 20 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born June 6, 1937 at Salina, he was the son of Cecil Marion and Stella M. (Lackey) Burnette.
KINSLEY - J. Craig Heinz, 66, died Oct. 17, at Hays Medical Center. Born Oct. 23, 1947, in Spearville, he was the son of Jim and Rosemary (McKillip) Heinz. He was a Finance Controller.
BEATRICE, Neb. - Karen L. Kirkpatrick, 88 years and 27 days of age, passed away at her home Saturday morning, Oct. 18th. She was born on Sept. 20, 1926, in Hoisington, to Duke and Opal (Sypolt) Van Brimmer. Karen was a 1944 graduate of Hoisington High School and attended Wichita State University for two years. Karen and William Kirkpatrick were married on May 7, 1948, in Hoisington. She then taught school at a rural school near Great Bend from 1949-1950. LARNED - Dale Otte, 76, passed away Oct. 17, at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Born Jan. 4, 1938, in Great Bend, he was the son of Wilmer and Leah Dorfshaffer Otte. A longtime area resident he was a farmer/stockman. On Sept. 16, 1956, he married Karen Rice in Great Bend. She survives.
