LARNED - E. Ross McBee, 71, died on Feb. 11 at St. John. He was born Nov. 26, 1939, at Fowler, the son of Cecil Frank and Virginia Gene Beaver McBee. A resident of Larned since 1962, he was retired from the Larned State Hospital.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Joy Amalie Deighton passed away on Feb. 10 at age 92. She was born in Rosetown, Saskatoon, Canada on Aug. 5, 1918, to Joseph and Josephine Suchy, who moved from Kansas to homestead in Canada in the early 1900s. While in Canada, Joy and five sisters were born before the family returned to Kansas.
Donal Lee Kelly, 76, of Great Bend, died Feb. 11 at Hospice House in Hutchinson. Services are pending and will be announced by Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend.
GREAT BEND - Larry L. Menzies, 74, died Feb. 8 at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Wichita. He was born Jan. 12, 1937 at Morrowville, the son of Hubert and Lois (Bahl) Menzies.

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE, WASH. – Eugene Charles Schardein, formerly of Great Bend, died Feb. 7 at the age of 83 at the ManorCare Health Services facility in Lynnwood, Wash.

ELLINWOOD - June Schiewe, 80, died Feb. 6 at Ellinwood District Hospital. Born June 16, 1930, in Sylvia, she was the daughter of Harry Merwin Shultz and Electa Lee Strawn Shultz. She attended Nickerson schools. An Ellinwood resident since 1963, formerly of San Diego, Calif., and Nickerson, she was a sales clerk at Litwin's and Brown's in Great Bend and the manager of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. On Sept. 12, 1977, she married Harold E. Schiewe in Ellinwood. He died on Dec. 9, 2008.
Pearl Margaret Mater, 96, died Feb. 4 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation. She was born Dec. 30, 1914 in Rush County, the daughter of Oliver Jefferson and Julie Marie (Koochel) Crowell.
n McCurdy, 77, died Jan. 26 at her home in Hulbert, Okla. She was born in Moundridge on June 12, 1933 to Martha (Kutnink) and Pearl Suenram.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Joseph "Joe" Vsetecka, 89, died Jan. 25 at his home in Colorado Springs, Colo. He was born on March 21, 1921, the son of Emil and Amelia (Zoboj) Vsetecka.
MARCOLA, Ore. - Carol Sue Wondra of Marcola, Ore., died Jan. 18 from a ruptured brain aneurysm at the age of 64. Born Nov. 15, 1946 in Port Huron, Mich., she was the daughter of Edward and Madeline (Graves) Hudy. On May 22, 1965, she married James Taylor in Port Huron, Mich. He died on April 9, 1990. She married Norbert Wondra in Reedsport, Ore. on April 11, 1996. In 1964 she graduated from Port Huron High School. She worked in various accounting positions retiring from International Paper in 1997.
WICHITA - Robert Wendell Smith, son of Gertrude Virginia Strong-Russell and Robert Galloway Smith, died Feb. 2 at the Robert J. Dole Veterans Center in Wichita. He was born Nov. 7, 1945, in Great Bend.

REDFORD, Mich. - Robert Lynn Humphrey, 71, died July 23 in Redford, Mich. Born May 18, 1943, in Great Bend, he was the son of Henry Ray and Lenora Caroline (Ochs) Humphrey. In 1961, he graduated from Hoisington High School and then attended Kansas State University. He eventually moved to Michigan where he worked for Nielsen TV Ratings and then for a trucking company until his retirement.
OLMITZ - Milton Alois Yarmer, 88, died July 25 at his home in Olmitz. Born May 17, 1926, at Russell County, he was the son of Frank Rudolph and Marie (Demel) Yarmer. Milton married Mary Agnes Gleissner May 26, 1948, at Olmitz. She died July 12, 2006.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Bradley K. Brann, 64, of Kansas City, Mo., passed suddenly on July 24. He was born Jan. 12, 1950, in Abilene, to Dorothy and Hilton Brann. He was a graduate of Great Bend High School and Fort Hays State University. He taught at Southeast Missouri University, followed by a career in sales and real estate.
HUTCHINSON - Mark A. Bomgardner, 51, of Hutchinson, went home to be with his Savior, July 27 at Reno County Hospice House. He may have lost his battle with cancer, but he conquered the grave when he accepted Christ as his savior. He was born May 31, 1963 in Joplin, MO, the son of Bob and Judy Allen Bomgardner. He was a 1981 graduate of Dodge City High School, and received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from Fort Hays State University. He was a Hutchinson resident for the past 15 years moving from Great Bend.
SPEARVILLE - Susie Ackerman, 95, died July 26, at Presbyterian Manor of the Plains in Dodge City. Born March 7, 1919, in Pratt, she was the daughter of Michael and Alice Duncan Shanley. On Oct. 2, 1951, she married John F. Ackerman in Pratt. He preceded her in death on Jan. 17, 2003. An area resident since 1951, she was a homemaker.

Lyle E. Schaben, 89, died July 26 at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. He was born Aug. 27, 1924, at Bazine, the son of John and Verda (Ryersee) Schaben. Mr. Schaben was a graduate of Bazine High School. He married Nathalie J. Borger Feb. 15, 1947, at Bazine. She died June 22, 2012. Raised on the family farm, he began farming as a young man and he and Nathalie raised their family in the house built by Lyle's father. She talked about growing up in the 1930s, about how hard times were, about nailing wet sheets to the windows during dust storms and the families dream of green pastures - then they moved here.
Jerry Mitchell Jones, 76, died July 24, at Hospice House of Reno County in Hutchinson. Born Dec. 13, 1937, in Hutchinson, he was the son of Ray and Marjorie (Swann) Jones. On March 12, 1958, he married Nelta Irene Simpson in Great Bend. She died on Dec. 3, 1997. A lifetime resident of Great Bend and Seward, he was the owner and operator of the J&J Cafe in Seward until 1997.
POULSBO, Wash. - A memorial service for John David Lewis, formerly of Larned, who died on May 19, will be held at 1 p.m. on Aug. 2, at the First Presbyterian Church in Larned. Memorials are suggested to the church, Larned EMT's or the Pawnee County Food Pantry.
Clarence "C. D." Johnson, 63, died July 25 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. He was born Jan. 6, 1951, at Great Bend, the son of Clarence Harve and Bernadine (Ericks) Johnson. He married Jolene Debes on Oct. 11, 1980, at Great Bend. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was a rural letter carrier for Rural Route 2 for the United States Postal Service, Great Bend, retiring in 2012.
