VALLEY CENTER - Joe Lynn Wheat, 80, of Valley Center, formerly of Great Bend and Pittsburg, retired Joe's Welding owner, beloved husband, dad, and grandpa, passed away March 8. He was born in Blytheville, Ark., to William Isaac Wheat and Ollie Marie (Epperson) Wheat.

ST. JOHN - Ron DeVore, 55, died March 13 as a result of an automobile accident. He was born Aug. 3, 1955, in St. John, the son of Ronnie W. and Patricia J. (Sayler) DeVore. He was a cowboy and lifelong resident of St. John, graduating from St. John High School in 1973.
CENTRALIA, WASH. - Centralia resident Kelly Jean Phelps died at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, Wash., on March 9, after a long battle with breast cancer.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Christopher Louis Divis was born July 31, 1984, at Sioux City, Iowa. He was confirmed April 26, 1998, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton, Iowa. Chris attended Maple Valley Anthon-Oto High School and graduated in the class of 2002. WICHITA - Randall Eugene Oliver, 89, passed away March 11 at Lakewood Senior Living Center in Wichita. He was born Sept. 15, 1921, in Madison, the son of Willis Monroe and Amy Freelove Holland Oliver. He graduated from Madison High School in 1939. He retired from the U. S. Navy and had served during World War II in the Pacific.

OMAHA, NEB. - Barbara C. Boyd, 62, of Omaha, Neb., died Feb. 27. She was born on Jan. 11, 1949.
Paul Turnbull, 81, went to meet Jesus Feb. 20, 2011. Paul, the youngest of 11, and his twin, John, were born in Elizabeth, Pa., in 1929. He attended Sterling College and served as Bushton Postmaster 42 years and on boards of USD 328 and Great Bend Center for Counseling. Paul loved gardening, swimming, family camping trips, making home-made ice cream, playing Boogaloo and Tennessee Turnbull Reunions.
Archie "Galen" Allen, 73, died March 4 at home in Great Bend. He was born Jan. 25, 1938, at Great Bend, the son of Archie Roy and Rosetta Mae (Smiley) Allen. He married Barbara Leah Feaster on Jan. 1, 1963, at Windsor, Mo. She died June 29, 2006. He worked for the Boeing Company in Seattle, Wash., as an engineer. Mr. Allen was a lifelong resident of Great Bend, also living in Bozeman, Mont., Seattle, Wash., and Torrance, Calif.
ELLINWOOD - Wilma G. Dannebohm, 75, died March 7 at Stafford County Hospital in Stafford. She was born May 3, 1935, at Midian, the daughter of Ted and Irene Waterman Zimmerman. She graduated from Ellinwood High School. A lifetime Ellinwood resident, she was a nurse at Ellinwood District Hospital, a florist at Flowers and Things and a secretary at Immanuel United Church of Christ, all of Ellinwood.
NESS CITY - Gilbert Philip Rebel, age 84, passed away on March 5 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. He was born on Feb. 18, 1927, in Schoenchen, the son of Joe and Lena Zimmerman Rebel. He was a farmer and he worked for Ness County road maintenance for 37 years.
KIMBALL, Neb. - Patrick A. Dunegan, 73, of Kimball, Neb., died March 3 at the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, Colo. Born Sept. 6, 1939, in Ellinwood, he was the son of Patrick and Mildred (Powell) Dunegan. He was raised and attended school in Great Bend. He married Carol L. Wenger on Sept. 15, 1957, at Great Bend. The family moved to Kimball in 1958 and he worked with Curley Hensley doing metal fabrication in the oil field. He retired in 2007.
GODDARD - Karen Kay (Miller) Marcotte, 66, died Oct. 21 at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Goodard. Born Jan. 18, 1948, in Claflin, she was the daughter of Joseph Miller and Lucille (Habiger) Miller. She was employed by Koch Industries as a records administrator.
Thomas E. Harris, 67, died Oct. 22 at his home in Great Bend. He was born Jan. 29, 1947, at Neosho, Mo., the son of Lawrence Edwin and Eula (Stites) Harris. He married Shirley Schmitt May 1, 1965 at Great Bend. A Great Bend resident since 1965, coming from Granby, Mo., he was a long-time oilfield truck driver and later owned and operated Tom Harris Trucking.
CLAFLIN - Stephen F. Demel, 86, died Oct. 22 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. Born Dec. 26, 1927, he was the son of Joseph and Mary (Lamatsch) Demel. On April 23, 1957, he married Dolores A. Jenisch in Odin. A lifelong resident of Barton County, he was a farmer.
Mary Elizabeth Henkle, 80, died on Oct. 21 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born April 9, 1934, in Burlington she was the daughter of Charles William and Hazel Loretta (Doll) Reynolds. On Feb. 12, 1950, she married Carl W. Henkle in Holyrood. A resident of Great Bend since 1953, coming from Ellsworth County, she was employed by Sears in the customer service department, retiring after more than 30 years of service.

CONCORDIA - Sister Jeanette Wasinger, 76, died Oct. 22, at Nazareth Motherhouse in Concordia. She was a Sister of St. Joseph for 56 years. Born in Hays on June 3, 1938, she was the daughter of Nick and Catherine (Stecklein) Wasinger, the younger of two children, and was baptized Jeanette Mae. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, Concordia, on Sept. 8, 1957. On March 18, 1958, Jeanette received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph and was given the name Sister Joseph Andre. She was born June 4, 1950 at Russell, the daughter of Gerald L. and Catherine (Nault) Kennedy. A Dodge City resident for the past 40 years, moving from Hoisington, she worked at Sonic Drive In and Wardrobe Cleaners, both in Dodge City, retiring in 2012. She enjoyed crocheting and making poppies for the Veterans.

Mary Lea Wade, 85, died Oct. 21, at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. Born Aug. 14, 1929, in Prague, Okla., she was the daughter of Alvin and Pearl (Stiffler) Montgomery. On Oct. 14, 1951, she married Lee Wade in Great Bend. He died on April 9, 1988. A resident of Great Bend since 1946, coming from Prague, Okla., she was a secretary for Kopke Law Office and Haneke Financial Services.
RUSSELL - Gerald Dean Bender, 72, passed away on Oct. 19, at Russell Regional Hospital. Born Jan. 23, 1942, in Russell, he was the son of Herbert H. and Viola E. (Mai) Bender. He grew up and attended schools in the Milberger area. He was employed by the City of Russell in the refuse department for 20 years, retiring in 1999.
CLINTON, Iowa - Gerald V. Galusha, 91, of Clinton, Iowa, died Sunday Oct. 19, at his home. Gerald was born on Aug. 16, 1923, in Garden Plaines, Ill., the son of James and Louise (Gerhardt) Galusha. He graduated from Erie High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945, with the 90th Infantry Division under General Patton. He was wounded on Jan. 16, 1945, at the Battle of the Bulge, when he received severe head injuries from mortar shell shrapnel.
Jack Daubert, 61, died Oct. 19 at Hutchinson Regional Hospital. Born in Great Bend, on April 9, 1953, he was the son of Herman and Wanda (Riemann) Daubert. He graduated from Great Bend High School in 1972. Jack worked as a Certified Medical Assistant at "The Cedars" retirement community in McPherson. He was a longtime resident of Great Bend.
Kathy L. Kaiser, 65, passed away Oct. 19, at her home. Born Aug. 10, 1949, in Hopeton, Okla., she was the daughter of Glenn S. and Artie R. (Elliott) Jones. A resident of Great Bend since 1977, she worked 23 years for USD #428 in Food Service. On July 30, 1977, she married Paul Kaiser in Great Bend. He survives of the home.
