MOUNTLAKE TERRACE, WASH. – Eugene Charles Schardein, formerly of Great Bend, died Feb. 7 at the age of 83 at the ManorCare Health Services facility in Lynnwood, Wash.

ELLINWOOD - June Schiewe, 80, died Feb. 6 at Ellinwood District Hospital. Born June 16, 1930, in Sylvia, she was the daughter of Harry Merwin Shultz and Electa Lee Strawn Shultz. She attended Nickerson schools. An Ellinwood resident since 1963, formerly of San Diego, Calif., and Nickerson, she was a sales clerk at Litwin's and Brown's in Great Bend and the manager of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. On Sept. 12, 1977, she married Harold E. Schiewe in Ellinwood. He died on Dec. 9, 2008.
Pearl Margaret Mater, 96, died Feb. 4 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation. She was born Dec. 30, 1914 in Rush County, the daughter of Oliver Jefferson and Julie Marie (Koochel) Crowell.
n McCurdy, 77, died Jan. 26 at her home in Hulbert, Okla. She was born in Moundridge on June 12, 1933 to Martha (Kutnink) and Pearl Suenram.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Joseph "Joe" Vsetecka, 89, died Jan. 25 at his home in Colorado Springs, Colo. He was born on March 21, 1921, the son of Emil and Amelia (Zoboj) Vsetecka.
MARCOLA, Ore. - Carol Sue Wondra of Marcola, Ore., died Jan. 18 from a ruptured brain aneurysm at the age of 64. Born Nov. 15, 1946 in Port Huron, Mich., she was the daughter of Edward and Madeline (Graves) Hudy. On May 22, 1965, she married James Taylor in Port Huron, Mich. He died on April 9, 1990. She married Norbert Wondra in Reedsport, Ore. on April 11, 1996. In 1964 she graduated from Port Huron High School. She worked in various accounting positions retiring from International Paper in 1997.
WICHITA - Robert Wendell Smith, son of Gertrude Virginia Strong-Russell and Robert Galloway Smith, died Feb. 2 at the Robert J. Dole Veterans Center in Wichita. He was born Nov. 7, 1945, in Great Bend.
Casey Ann Goodwin, 26, of Great Bend, died Feb. 2 in Barton County. She was born Jan. 23, 1985, at Great Bend, the daughter of Mark and Donna (Jean) Goodwin.
Joseph L. Lapka Sr., 82, died Jan. 30, 2011, at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. He was born March 14, 1928, at Timken, the son of Frank J. and Catherine (Bouchal) Lapka. Lapka married Dolores Gutierrez June 28, 1951, at Great Bend. They were later divorced.
Charles "Terry" Eatherly, 56, died Jan. 31, 2011, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born July 7, 1954, at Great Bend, he was the son of Charles T. and Dorothy (Davis) Eatherly. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was a roughneck for Bigheart Drilling and an avid golfer.
MANITOWOC, Wis. – Barbara M. Schmidt, 62, died Jan. 29, 2011, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc, Wis. She was born March 15, 1948, at Dighton, the daughter of August and Bertha Lee (Schanfeldt) Stremel. On May 17, 1974, she married Doug Schmidt at Larned. He survives.

PAWNEE ROCK - Laura Jean Miller, 86, passed away Oct. 9, at her home in Pawnee Rock. Born June 19, 1928, in Salt Lake City, Utah, she was the daughter of Horace B. and Laura Crawford Rogers. On April 28, 1992, she married Edward W. Miller in Littleton, Colo. He passed away on Nov. 27, 2008. She was a homemaker.

RUSSELL - Richard Henry Dumler, 88, found peace on Oct. 14, after a long battle with multiple illnesses. At the time of his death, he lived at Rose Estates assisted living in Overland Park. Born on April 19, 1926, in Russell, he was the son of Henry and Agnes Dumler. His mother later married Ted Gariepy. He attended high school in Russell, where he was a sports star. There he met cheerleader Betty Joanne Kilian. He entered the service in 1944, serving in the United States Army Air Force until 1945. He married Betty Jo on June 1, 1947.

Reymundo Martinez, 27, passed away on Oct. 11, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born on Dec. 29, 1986, in Garden City, he was the son of Martin Martinez and Lupe (Rubio) Martinez. He moved to Great Bend, at an early age and worked construction with his godfather, Arturo Escamilla.

Born Jan. 13, 1964, in Ransom, she was the daughter of Donald and Ruby (Armer) Popp. She attended elementary school at Pawnee Rock, and in 1982, graduated from Hoisington High School. WICHITA - Bashor, C. LeRoy, 74, passed away on Oct. 11. He was a proud Vietnam veteran serving 10 years in the United States Navy. Following the military he graduated Fort Hays State University with a master's degree in psychology. He was a retired school psychologist for USD 428 in Great Bend.
Nadine Dreiling, 81, died Oct. 10, at Hays Medical Center. Born June 25, 1933, in Neck City, Mo., she was the daughter of George and Vera (Sargent) Moore. On Oct. 2, 1954, she married Donald A. Dreiling in Chase. He died on Nov. 11, 2010. A resident of Great Bend since 1954, coming from Chase, she and her husband owned and operated Don's Food Mart and she retired from Dillon's Pharmacy. She loved her grandchildren and watching sports, especially the University of Kansas Jayhawks and New York Yankees.
WINFIELD - Donald M. "Don" Kline, 87, of Winfield, passed away on Oct. 11, at Cumbernauld Village. Born Aug. 29, 1927, in Wichita, he was the son of Arthur C. and Martha H. (Harris) Kline. He was raised and educated in the Marion and Great Bend areas. Don left school prior to graduation to join the United States Navy. HOISINGTON - George L. Carson, 71, died Aug. 30, at Clara Barton Hospital. Born July 18, 1943 in Great Bend, he was the son of Russell and Pearl (Smith) Carson. On March 3, 1967, he married Gloria Newell in Damar. He was a graduate of Fort Hays State University. A lifetime resident of rural Barton County, he was employed by the Kansas Fish and Game Commission as a biologist.
HOISINGTON - Kirby Dean Ricke, 61, died Oct. 11, at Almost Home in Great Bend. Born July 2, 1953, in Alva, Okla., he was the son of Theodore Dean and Darlene (Huffman) Ricke. Kirby graduated in 1971 from Hoisington High School. He was active in both vocal music and band programs, excelling at the trumpet.
