CHASE - Shirley Evelyn Sutton Schmidt, 91, died June 26 at the Rice County District Hospital in Lyons. Born Oct. 10, 1919, in Hudson, she was the daughter of Lesley Edmon and Mettie Derr Sutton. On July 6, 1938, she married Edward "Ed" Carl Schmidt in Great Bend. He died on Nov. 7, 2001. A resident of Chase since 1938, formerly of Great Bend, she was a retired cook at the Rice County District Hospital in Lyons.
Gerald "Jerry" Wagnon, 67, died June 12 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Dec. 23, 1943, at Joplin, Mo., the son of Dean and Leona (Beatty) Dugan. He married Wanda Halling on Feb. 14, 1981, at Dundee. He worked for Reiter Chevrolet, Standish Motors and Jeff O'Neill Ford as a car salesman.
PFEIFER - Laurine M. Dreiling, 87, died, June 25 at Wesley Towers in Hutchinson. She was born Feb. 20, 1924, at Emmeram, to Joseph J. and Mary (Hammerschmidt) Dreiling. She married Norbert F. Dreiling on Aug. 29, 1944, at Hays. He died May 3, 1977. She was a homemaker.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Dr. Marvin Deines, 84, died 23 June in Chesapeake, Va. He was born Jan. 23, 1927, at Olmitz, the son of Jacob Deines and Hannah Janke Deines. He was a retired chiropractor and the founder of "Foundation of Faith IV," a nonprofit organization that awarded college scholarships in memory of fallen military sons and daughters of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
ELLINWOOD - Joseph M. Hickel, 81, died June 20 at Ellinwood. A lifetime resident of Barton County, he was born to Louis J. and Katherine (Robl) Hickel on Jan. 2, 1930, in the Sts. Peter & Paul area. He married Helen McPherson, of rural Ellinwood, on Dec. 29, 1954.
ELLINWOOD - C. Loaine (Haines) Perry, 90, formerly of Arkansas City, died June 19 at the Ellinwood District Hospital. Born Aug. 13, 1920, in Newton, she was the daughter of George M. and Sylvia I. (Church) Haines. She was reared and educated in Potwin and El Dorado, graduating from El Dorado High School in 1938. She married John Patten and later D.J. Perry. The couple made their home all over Kansas and for 15 years in Missouri before moving to Winfield in 1992 and Arkansas City in 1997. She was a machinist for Boeing, a seamstress, and did house cleaning.
LARNED - Walter (Mac) Fox, 92, passed away May 20, 2015, at Diversicare of Larned. Born Sept. 12, 1922, in Larned, he was the son of Walter M. and Gladys Strader Fox. On Dec. 15, 1946, he married Dorothy D. Goldsmith in Wichita. She passed away on May 16, 2013. A lifetime area resident, he was a farmer, worked at Larned State Hospital as the plumbing shop foreman for 32 years and also worked at Boeing for one year before going in the service.
RUSSELL - Fara Mae (Brack) Popp, 81, passed away May 17, at the Hays Medical Center. Born on July 13, 1933, on the family farm north of Otis, she was the daughter of Edwin and Phoebe (Keil) Brack. She grew up on the farm and graduated from Otis High School. On June 15, 1958, she married Paul Popp in Otis. She was a homemaker and assisted her parents on the farm when needed.
WINFIELD - Susan Marie (Feldman) Quint, 46, of Winfield, went to her Heavenly home on May 15, after a valiant fight with Brain Cancer. She was born March 19, 1969, in Great Bend to Richard and Jackye (Strother) Feldman. Susan graduated from Great Bend High School and attended Barton County Community College. She obtained an Office Manager degree from Wichita Area Vocational Technical College and an Associate Degree from Cowley County Community College in Early Childhood Education. Julia Ann Barnes, 54, died May 16, at her home in Great Bend. Born July 4, 1960, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of James R. Jr., and Joyce L. (Mohr) Lofland. On Nov. 14, 1981, she married Jeff Barnes in Great Bend. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, she was employed in retirement plan management at CPI Qualified Plan Consultants for more than 15 years. She had a great love of quilting.
TOPEKA - Services for Laura Linn Knowles will be at 10 a.m on Wednesday, May 27, at First Presbyterian Church in Topeka. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. at Glasco Cemetery.
