GREAT BEND - Garin Dean Arnold was born at 7:09 p.m. March 18 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He weighed 3 pounds 8 ounces and was 16 inches long. After meeting his mommy and daddy, Garin went directly to the NICU. In his time, he was amazingly cared for by his nurses and doctors.
NEWTON - Richard A. Schmidt, 83, died March 27. Born Sept. 7, 1927 at St. Rose Hospital in Great Bend, he was the son of August and Esther K. (Schmidt) Schmidt. He attended school in Meno, Okla. In 1948 he graduated from Bethel College. The next two years were spent in a flour mill laboratory in Minneapolis, Minn. He returned to Bethel College taking education classes and became a certified public school teacher. He helped build the new Bethel College Mennonite Church. Joette was born Sept. 22, 1950 in Goodland, to John W. and Velma E. (Peter) Lindsten with St. Francis as her childhood home. Three years later, to Joette's delight, her twin sisters, Joyce and Janice, were born. MACKSVILLE - Eldon Ernest Lutz, 79, died March 24 at the Stafford County Hospital. The son of Ernest Franklin and Kathryn Alice (Brenn) Lutz, he was born Nov. 1, 1931 in rural St. John. Eldon was a resident of Macksville since 1982 and formerly of St. John, where he farmed. On June 15, 1951, he married Delores (Yarmer) at Great Bend, and he then married Betty J. (Freeman) DeGarmo on Apr. 2, 1982 at Macksville. She survives of the home. His memberships include Macksville Christian Church and the VFW. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
Mildred Oleta Elliott, 94, died March 24, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Feb. 5, 1917 in Medford, Okla., she was the daughter of John Wesley and Lillie Belle (Wykes) Wisehart. On June 12, 1932 she married Harry W. Elliott in Hays. He died Dec. 24, 1997. A Great Bend resident since 1938, coming from Ransom, she was a secretary for the Barton County Courthouse and the County Superintendent of Schools.
Barbara Kay Clark, 70, died March 23 at her home in Great Bend. Born Sept. 17, 1940 in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Howard and Betty (Alderson) Bangerter. On May 12, 1964 she married Joseph A. Clark in Colorado Springs, Colo. He died in 1997. A Great Bend resident for four years, coming from Wichita, she was a retired self-employed accountant.

FORT MCCOY,FLA. - Mr. Leroy "Bill" Maddox, 83, of Ft. McCoy, Fla., passed away on March 19, at his son's home in Williston, FlA. He was born in Laurel, Miss. and moved to Ft. McCoy, Fla. in 1979 from Miami, Fla., where he retired following 32 years of service as a supervisor for Southern Bell Telephone. Bill loved fishing and hunting, loved gardening and traveling and loved tinkering around his home.

On Dec. 20, 1959 she married Robert Sparks in Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend since 1945, coming from Wichita, she was a realtor for Coldwell Banker Sell Real Estate and previously for Keenan Real Estate. David Dean Seyfert, 39, died March 23 at his residence. Born July 5, 1971 in Great Bend, he was the son of Dale D. and Shirley R. (Smith) Seyfert. A resident of Great Bend for 20 years, coming from the farm north of Claflin, he was a small engine repairman for Carr Auto and Electronics. His hobbies were working on mowers, chain saws or any small engine repair.
HOLYROOD - Norma Ruth Schaefer, 88, passed away Jan. 25 at the Good Samaritan Society in Ellsworth. She was born June 10, 1926, in Lincoln, to Anna E. (Bahls) and Neils M. Pedersen.
PAWNEE ROCK - Hazel "Alberta" Crone, 89, died Jan. 24, at her home in rural Pawnee Rock. Born July 12, 1925, in Anderson County, she was the daughter of George Albert and Hazel Olive (Colgin) Payne. On June 26, 1942, she married Francis "Roy" Crone in Iola. He died on Nov. 19, 2007. A resident of Barton County most of her life, she was a dedicated mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
HOISINGTON - Gloria K Zamarripa, 66, died Jan. 24, 2015, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. She was born July 14, 1948, the daughter of Fred Ray and Alice (Rohr) Kincaid. Gloria married Frank Zamarripa April 4, 1964 at Great Bend. He died May 6, 1989.
Charley Hoffsmith, 67, died Jan. 24, 2015, at Great Bend Regional Hospital, after a long battle with colon cancer. He was born July 4, 1947, at Dighton, the son of Benjamin Franklin and Marie (Orten) Hoffsmith. A long-time resident of Great Bend, he was the owner and operator of Charley's Tree Service.

ELLINWOOD - Sue Elizabeth Ballantine, 67, died Jan. 22, 2015, at Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita. She was born on Feb. 28, 1947, to Donald H. and Violet Ann (Schartz) Ballantine. Sue was a resident of Wichita for 35 years and formerly of Ellinwood, KS. She retired from Boeing in 1998 where she worked for 20 years.
Gary Lee Campbell, 73, died Jan. 22, 2015, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Nov. 26, 1941, in St. Elmo, Illinois, he was the son of Emerson and Mildred Louise (Koberlein) Campbell. On April 4, 1961, he married Margaret Rose Debes in Great Bend. She died on July 31, 2013. A Great Bend resident since 1958, he worked in the oilfield and then was a fabricator for Doonan Trailer.

On Oct. 14, 1967, she married Donald Hlavaty of Olmitz. JoAnn and Donald lived in the Olmitz area until 1982 when they retired and moved to Bella Vista, Ark.
RUSSELL - Verlin E. "Buster" Humphrey, 67, passed away Jan. 19, at the Hays Medical Center. Born April 12, 1947, in Great Bend, he was the son of Kenneth "K.D." and Ruth (Pearce) Humphrey. He graduated from Russell High School and attended Kansas State University. On April 24, 1980, he was united in marriage to Linda Harmon in Salina. He was employed by Southern States Oil Company, later known as Lasmo Oil Company, as a pumper and made his way up to Regional Production Manager. LARNED - Peggy J. Thompson, 61, passed away Jan. 19, 2015 at Via Christi Hospital St. Francis in Wichita. Born July 6, 1953, in Hoisington, she was the daughter of John H. and Marjorie Wagner Niewald. On Dec. 17, 1983, she married Kelly Thompson. They later divorced. A longtime area resident, she worked at the Larned State Hospital for 23 ½ years as a LMHT.
OLMITZ - Marilou Axman, 84, died Jan. 20, 2015 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Nov. 1, 1930, in Odin, she was the daughter of William and Eleanor (Hickel) Linsner. On April 20, 1949, she married Frank W. Axman in Odin. He died on May 17, 1994. A resident of Olmitz since 1949, coming from Odin, she was a retired nurses' aide, working for the Hoisington Hospital.
Joseph John Zecha, 89, died Jan. 21, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Oct. 25, 1925, in Claflin, he was the son of Emil R. and Mary Theresa (Kinzel) Zecha. A Great Bend resident for the past year and half, living in Denver, Colo. for 50 years, he was an auto mechanic for Montgomery Ward, retiring in 1990. He was a fine example of charity to almost everyone he met, befriending numerous persons in need throughout his life. He was an animal lover, especially dogs.
OLMITZ - Joseph E. Hlavaty, 77, died Jan. 19, 2015, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse. He was born Nov. 8, 1937, the son of Erwin J. and Clara Elizabeth (Riedel) Hlavaty. He married Justina Maneth Oct. 6, 1958, at La Crosse. A lifetime Olmitz resident, he was a dairy farmer and stockman and also the postmaster for Olmitz for 25 years.
