Dorothy B. Essmiller, 89, died Sept. 19 at her home in Great Bend. Born June 1, 1921, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Harry and Ruby (Travis) LeRoy. On Aug. 3, 1941, she married Ralph Essmiller in Great Bend. He died Aug. 9, 1974. A lifetime resident of Great Bend she was a farm wife and bookkeeper for McDonald Tank and Equipment Company, Inc.
COLBY - Betty Elaine Fitzsimmons Sloan died peacefully at her home in Colby on Sept. 24. She was born April 18, 1924 to Ethyl Lene (Logan) and Everett Wallace Elmore in Rozel, Kansas. HOISINGTON - Dean Steiner, 78, died Thursday at Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita, Kansas. He was born Dec. 3, 1931 at Hoisington, Kansas the son of Louis and Lenora (Ummel) Steiner. A longtime Hoisington resident, coming from Odin, Mr. Steiner was a retired employee of Kansas Wildlife and Parks at Cheyenne Bottoms, retiring in 1992. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

OTIS - Kenneth P. Brack, 90, died Sept. 22 at Rush County Nursing Home, La Crosse. He was born Aug. 21, 1920, at Otis, the son of Peter E. and Amelia (Horch) Brack Foos. He married Fern Marie Schlegel on April 21, 1946, at Otis. She died Dec. 21, 1993. An Otis and Rush County resident for 70 years, coming from Ness County, he was a retired farmer.

Orval Aldrich Hejny, 89, of Great Bend, died Sept. 22 at Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend. She later married Phillip Ward in 1976. She then married Dennis Cook on Aug. 11, 2003, at Las Vegas, Nevada. She worked in retail for Revco and Dillons until retiring.

Jeanne Louise Schmitt, 70, died Sept. 6, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Born Aug. 31, 1944, in Winfield, she was the daughter of Raymond Chandler and Helen Ruth (Westin) Muret. On May 30, 1969, she married Terryl "Terry" Keith Schmitt in Manhattan. He died on Aug. 17, 2006. A Great Bend resident since 1978, coming from Hoisington where she had lived since 1969, she was an Extension Agent in Belleville, then a dietician for the Clara Barton Hospital. She retired as a secretary for Central Baptist Church in Great Bend.
